The Techmagic Realm & Spells
The cornerstone of the expansion is the introduction of Techmagic, a completely original, standalone magic school that merges crude mechanical technology with pure wizarding sorcery.
Elder wizards across the realms view Techmagic as a grotesque abomination of the modern era, but progressive masterminds manipulate its synergy to bypass traditional magical bottlenecks. The school adds 10 original spells designed to expand a player’s economic and intelligence logistics:
- Scouting Probes: A low-cost early-game spell that conjures automated, floating mechanical probes across overworld tiles. These drones rapidly strip away the fog of war and visually reveal hidden resources or mana nodes without risking physical military scouts.
- Cyber Sprites: A tactical enchantment that infuses frontline units with glowing, digitized sprites. This spell significantly steps up target combat velocities and reflex attributes mid-turn.
- Industrial Synchronicity: Siphons ambient arcane energy directly into city workshop production queues, instantly multiplying building velocities at the expense of localized mana reserves.
The Soultrapped Race
The expansion introduces The Soultrapped, an unusual playable faction composed of man-machine hybrids and rune-carved mechanical constructs.
Lore and Traits
Unlike stereotypical malevolent machine empires found in science fiction, the Soultrapped are a peaceful, highly calculated collective that actively prioritizes internal municipal infrastructure, economic prosperity, and isolation over warmongering expansion.
Mechanically, their units stand out as some of the most specialized and asymmetric in the game:
- High Kinetic Durability: Even their basic Tier 1 units, like Spearbots, carry some of the highest base armor parameters in the entire 4X sandbox, making them exceptionally resilient to physical melee attacks on the tactical map.
- Low Magical Resilience: To offset their heavy physical plate defenses, the Soultrapped suffer from exceptionally low magic resistance statistics. This vulnerability leaves them highly susceptible to enemy crowd-control hexes, dispels, and direct elemental magic blasts.
Distinct Military Roster
The faction completely lacks a traditional basic archer unit pool, relying instead on heavy artillery and unique engineering structures:
- Engineers & Tech Priests: Specialized builders who maintain structural durability points on frontline constructs mid-combat while boosting city gold outputs.
- The Yeet: A bizarre, giant mechanical hand unit that physically acts as mobile field artillery, throwing explosive Magbombs across long ranges to splinter enemy ranks.
- Soul Cannons & Submarines: Heavy, late-game war machines engineered to dominate linear tactical land channels and safeguard maritime coastlines.
New Playable Wizards & Heroes
Rise of the Soultrapped expands character customization by injecting three pre-built Wizards (supported by 6 new customizable wizard traits) and four unique heroes into the recruitment pools:
Featured Grand Wizards
- Nineseven: The poster character of the expansion. She is a once-noble elven mage who fully embraced cybernetic adaptation, utilizing her exclusive tech-mage attributes to drastically lower the mana cost and research cycles of the Techmagic tree.
- Morique: A dark, highly malevolent sorceress who blends the schools of Death and Chaos to field highly volatile, life-leeching army combinations.
- Grendel: A veteran, hardened beastman warlord holding a deep, primordial connection to Nature magic, granting innate health regeneration skills and passive magic resistance to his followers.
Recruitable Heroes
- Billie the Gunslinger: A cheerful, fast-talking halfling youth sporting pink twintails who wields dual black-powder pistols, boasting exceptional ranged marksmanship and critical strike metrics.
- Moma and Ilde: A specialized twin-duo hero unit that shares a single tactical footprint, capable of casting the exclusive Sharp Exchange spell to violently swap health pools or positions with an enemy target.
- Oldmane Ironjaw: A hulking, heavily armored gnoll champion optimized for anchoring defensive frontlines.
- Timur the Deadshot: An enigmatic dark elf sniper specialized in bypassing enemy shields entirely via armor-piercing arrows.
Tech Dungeons & Mid-Game Event Chains
To provide vertical challenges for mid-game empires, the expansion alters the overworld world generator to populate Arcanus and Myrror with a fresh location type: The Tech Dungeon.
These dungeons are metallic, ancient subterranean facilities guarded by rogue, unhinged elements of the Soultrapped race. Breaching and successfully clearing a Tech Dungeon rewards the conquering wizard with massive, rare crafting resources, gold caches, and ancient tech blueprints.
“Conquering a Tech Dungeon is a major risk-reward calculation. Failing to prepare for their high-armor defenders will stall your military campaign, but letting them sit unchecked risks triggering an uncontrollable late-game machine awakening.”
Furthermore, interacting with these dungeons triggers a dynamic, server-side Chain of Events. By default, around Turn 200 on Hard difficulty (or Turn 300 on Normal), the rogue machine networks inside the un-cleared dungeons will violently awaken, launching coordinated, map-wide mechanical incursions against nearby wizard cities. For players who prefer a traditional, slow-paced high-fantasy experience, the developer integrated a dedicated software toggle in the match creation menu to disable this event chain entirely.
Legacy and Current Status (2026)
As of May 2026, Rise of the Soultrapped remains highly popular among the Master of Magic community for providing a fresh sci-fi twist to the classic 1994 fantasy formula. Built cleanly on the modern 64-bit Unity framework, the DLC runs flawlessly under Windows 10 and Windows 11 out-of-the-box.
The expansion’s launch was accompanied by a major free base-game update that permanently overhauled the core client, introducing a comprehensive Steam Workshop integration, a “Repeat Spell” casting button interface, and an extensive rewrite of the city unrest and town distance metrics to curb city-spamming strategies.
In modern 2026 playthroughs, the Techmagic school and Soultrapped units are fully integrated into community overhaul mods (such as Apotheosis), allowing strategy purists to seamlessly blend cyborg legions with phantom ghostships and traditional dragons across the planes of Arcanus and Myrror.
