Kvark is a retro-inspired, first-person “boomer shooter” developed by Czech indie studio Latest Past in collaboration with Perun Creative, who also published the game. After spending over a year in Steam Early Access, the game officially launched its full 1.0 release on October 3, 2024, for PC, Mac, and Linux (with console ports for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch scheduled for mid-2025).

Built in Unreal Engine 5 but deeply stylized to look like a classic late-90s PC shooter, the game is a heavily atmospheric homage to titans of the genre like Half-Life and BioShock.

Core Concept and Story

The game is set in a fictionalized, alternate-history version of the 1980s Czech Republic during the Cold War. You play as a newly hired employee for a highly secretive, shady mining and research corporation called “Kvark.”

You quickly realize that this is not a normal job. You wake up locked in a holding cell amidst blaring alarms and an underground facility that is rapidly falling apart. Armed initially with nothing but a wrench, you must navigate through dark, crumbling uranium mines, brutalist corporate offices, and heavily guarded research labs to figure out what catastrophic event just occurred and, ultimately, how to escape. The narrative is largely environmental, told through hidden notes, audio logs, and the eerie, desolate atmosphere of the ruined facility.

Gameplay and Features

Kvark nails the nostalgic, fast-paced action of early PC shooters while adding a few modern quality-of-life mechanics:

  • The Arsenal: The combat is highly weapon-dependent. You start with basic melee tools and a standard 1950s-era pistol, eventually graduating to shotguns, grenades, bazookas, and experimental energy weapons like the EK-48 (which stuns enemies, allowing you to swap weapons and finish them off). Ammunition management is crucial in the early game.
  • The “Anethium” Upgrade System: In a bizarre twist of lore, you can find syringes filled with a green, radioactive substance called “Anethium”—canonically described as a mixture of uranium and dill. Injecting this substance acts as the game’s RPG mechanic, allowing you to unlock permanent perks and stat boosts in a dedicated skill tree.
  • Old-School Level Design: The levels are relatively large, maze-like, and highly interactive. You have to solve environmental puzzles (like finding specific valves to route power or unlocking doors), and the maps are absolutely packed with hidden secret rooms, Easter eggs, and stashes of health and ammo for players who take the time to explore behind walls and under stairs.
  • The Enemies: You fight a variety of foes ranging from corporate security guards in hazmat suits wielding batons to heavily armed soldiers, mutated dogs, and eventually, highly radioactive monstrosities that require constant movement and weapon juggling to defeat.

Reception

Upon its 1.0 release in late 2024, Kvark received “Very Positive” reviews on Steam.

Players praised the game for successfully capturing the specific, creeping dread and tight gunplay of the original Half-Life. The stylized graphics—which blend blocky, low-poly retro aesthetics with modern lighting and shadows—were highly commended. However, some hardcore FPS veterans criticized the game’s later half for becoming a bit too easy, noting that the game becomes overly generous with health and ammunition drops, and that the enemy variety and boss fights leave a little to be desired.

Quick Note

Kvark is a highly atmospheric, Slavic love letter to the golden era of 90s first-person shooters.

In short: If you are looking for a fast-paced, nostalgic trip through a crumbling, radioactive underground facility that perfectly channels the energy of Half-Life, this Czech indie title is an incredibly solid, highly stylized adventure.
