Iron Harvest: Operation Eagle is the massive, game-changing 2021 expansion to KING Art Games’ dieselpunk real-time strategy hit, Iron Harvest. Released in May 2021, this was not just a simple story add-on like Rusviet Revolution. Operation Eagle fundamentally shattered and rebuilt the multiplayer meta by introducing an entirely new playable faction and adding a completely new tactical layer to the battlefield: aviation.

Taking the game’s signature tactical, cover-based ground warfare and adding massive, heavily armed dieselpunk airships flying overhead, the expansion drastically expanded the scope of the 1920+ universe. Notably, KING Art Games released Operation Eagle as a standalone expansion on PC, meaning new players could purchase it and jump straight into the new campaign and multiplayer without needing to own the base game.

The New Faction: Usonia

The expansion introduces Usonia, the alternate-history version of the United States of America. Having largely stayed out of the Great War that devastated Europe, Usonia used the era of peace to become an undisputed economic and technological superpower.

Unlike the European factions that rely heavily on lumbering ground mechs, Usonia’s military doctrine is entirely built around air superiority and rapid deployment.

  • The Sky Fleet: Their roster features a terrifying array of flying war-machines, from nimble scout gyrocopters to the massive, heavily armored Salem gunships and the colossal, bomb-dropping Sky-Fortress.
  • Paratroopers: Because they control the skies, Usonia can paradrop specialized infantry directly behind enemy lines, bypassing the heavily fortified trench networks that define the European battlefields.
  • Ground Support: While their airforce is their crown jewel, they still field distinct, uniquely American-styled ground mechs, often resembling heavily weaponized, walking tractors and industrial construction equipment.

Gameplay and Mechanical Overhauls

The introduction of flying units completely changed the way Iron Harvest was played. Because the base game was so heavily focused on directional cover (sandbags, walls, trenches), the addition of units that could simply fly over that cover required every single faction to adapt.

Key gameplay mechanics and expansion additions include:

  • The Third Dimension: Aircraft ignore terrain bottlenecks, rivers, and ground cover. They can provide massive line-of-sight advantages and bombard pinned infantry from above. However, aircraft cannot capture resource nodes (Iron Mines and Oil Pumps) or victory flags, meaning a purely flying army will lose the economic war.
  • Anti-Air Retrofits: To ensure the original three factions (Polania, Saxony, and Rusviet) weren’t rendered obsolete, they were all given brand-new Anti-Air (AA) units. Every existing faction received new specialized AA infantry, alongside new mechanics for existing mechs (like swapping ammo types) to shoot the Usonian blimps out of the sky.
  • New Environments: The expansion leaves the snowy, muddy fields of Europe behind, introducing a brand-new biome: the deserts of Arabia. The new maps feature deep canyons, ancient ruins, and rolling sand dunes.

The Narrative Campaign

The expansion features a massive, fully voice-acted new single-player campaign consisting of seven distinct missions. You play as Captain William Mason, a Usonian pilot and war hero. Usonia intervenes in the global conflict, sending Mason’s air fleet to Arabia to aid the local resistance against the occupying Saxony Empire.

However, the narrative is surprisingly nuanced. What starts as a heroic liberation mission quickly morphs into a critique of imperialism. Mason soon realizes that his Usonian commanders are not in Arabia to save the locals, but rather to seize control of the region’s massive, untapped oil reserves for themselves, forcing Mason to make difficult choices about his loyalty.

Development and Legacy

Released in May 2021, Operation Eagle was exactly the kind of massive, meta-shifting expansion that classic RTS fans adore. It successfully addressed the base game’s lack of faction diversity and proved that the heavy, tactical Company of Heroes-style gameplay could successfully integrate flying units without breaking the balance.

Today, in 2026, Operation Eagle is widely considered the definitive way to experience the game. While it was originally sold as a standalone package on PC, it is now seamlessly integrated into the Iron Harvest: Complete Edition, ensuring that console and modern PC players get the full, uncompromised dieselpunk experience right out of the box.

Key Features:

  • The Usonian Republic — Take command of a brand-new, highly advanced American faction that completely dominates the skies.
  • Aviation Warfare — Deploy nimble gyrocopters, massive bombing zeppelins, and paratroopers to completely bypass traditional ground cover.
  • The Arabian Campaign — Follow Usonian Captain William Mason across seven massive new single-player missions set in the sweeping deserts of Arabia.
  • Anti-Air Arsenal — Adapt your classic European factions with brand-new Anti-Air mechs and infantry to swat the new flying threats out of the sky.
  • Standalone Accessibility — Originally released as a standalone entry on PC, now fully integrated into the acclaimed Complete Edition across all modern platforms.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) — May 27, 2021 (Released as a standalone expansion).
  • PlayStation 5 & Xbox Series X|S — October 26, 2021 (Included natively in the release of the Iron Harvest: Complete Edition).
