Forgive Me Father 2 is a 2024 indie retro-inspired first-person shooter developed by Polish studio Byte Barrel and published by Fulqrum Publishing. After spending roughly a year in Steam Early Access, it officially launched its 1.0 version on October 24, 2024, for PC (with console versions following). Serving as a direct sequel to the 2022 original, it is a fast-paced, blood-soaked “boomer shooter” dripping with Lovecraftian cosmic horror and presented in a striking, hand-drawn comic book aesthetic.

Core Concept and Story

The story continues the descent into madness established in the first game. You once again take on the role of the Priest, who finds himself trapped in a twisted, nightmarish asylum after the traumatic events of Pestisville.

Realizing that salvation is a myth and the cosmic gods are closing in, you embark on a brutal journey through the deepest, darkest corners of his fractured mind and beyond. The narrative leans heavily into the weird fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, pitting you against hordes of deranged cultists, plague-ridden zombies, and grotesque, tentacled abominations as you desperately try to restore your shattered sanity.

Gameplay and Features

While it retains the fast-paced, run-and-gun DNA of the original, Forgive Me Father 2 features significant mechanical and visual overhauls:

  • Evolved Comic Book Visuals: The game’s defining feature is its incredible aesthetic. Everything from the environments to the weapons looks like a living, breathing graphic novel. Crucially, Byte Barrel heavily upgraded the enemy sprites for the sequel. Instead of flat, 2D cutouts that always face you, enemies now feature 8-directional viewing angles, adding massive depth to the chaotic, 3D firefights.
  • The Madness System: Your sanity is directly tied to your combat effectiveness. As you kill enemies, your “Madness” meter fills up. You can unleash this accumulated madness to activate unearthly abilities, such as massive lifesteal, damage buffs, or powerful area-of-effect attacks using a mysterious, eldritch tome.
  • The Arsenal: The gunplay is heavy and highly satisfying. You wield a mix of standard early-1900s weaponry (like double-barreled shotguns, revolvers, and bolt-action rifles) and bizarre, mutated armaments that fire explosive green energy or acidic slime.
  • Dark Tome Upgrades: Between the fast-paced arena fights, you explore hubs where you can use the Dark Tome to upgrade your weapons and unlock new branches of your demonic abilities, allowing for distinct, highly aggressive playstyles.

Reception and Evolution

Upon its 1.0 release, Forgive Me Father 2 received a “Very Positive” reception from the boomer shooter community on Steam.

Players widely agreed that Byte Barrel successfully took feedback from the first game to heart. The gunplay felt significantly punchier, the level design was tighter and less repetitive, and the visual upgrade to the 8-directional sprites made the comic-book style pop even more. While some critics noted that the core gameplay loop still boils down to simply circle-strafing while shooting swarms of enemies—a fundamental staple of the retro shooter genre—it was heavily praised as a blood-soaked, highly stylish improvement over its predecessor in almost every way.

Quick Note

Forgive Me Father 2 is a frantic, beautifully illustrated descent into Lovecraftian madness.

In short: It doesn’t attempt to reinvent the retro-shooter wheel, but by doubling down on its gorgeous, graphic-novel aesthetic and tightening its fast-paced, magic-infused gunplay, it delivers a deeply satisfying and gory love letter to classic 90s shooters and cosmic horror.
