Far Cry 4 is a 2014 open-world first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Released on November 18, 2014, for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, it builds directly upon the wildly successful foundation of its predecessor. Powered by an upgraded Dunia 2 engine, the game trades the tropical jungles of the Rook Islands for the breathtaking, highly vertical, and snow-capped peaks of the fictional Himalayan country of Kyrat.
Core Story
You play as Ajay Ghale, a young man returning to his birthplace of Kyrat to fulfill his mother’s dying wish: scattering her ashes at a shrine called Lakshmana. His pilgrimage is immediately derailed when his bus is intercepted by the flamboyant, impeccably dressed, and utterly ruthless dictator, Pagan Min. Ajay is soon rescued by the Golden Path, a rebel faction founded by his late father, and is thrust into a bloody civil war to liberate the country from Pagan’s royal army. The narrative is defined by its branching choices; players must constantly choose to support the conflicting ideologies of the Golden Path’s two leaders, Amita and Sabal, shaping the future of Kyrat in deeply morally gray ways.
Gameplay and Features
Far Cry 4 took the addictive outpost-clearing and hunting mechanics of Far Cry 3 and added massive verticality and new layers of chaotic fun:
- Vertical Traversal: The mountainous terrain introduced the grappling hook for scaling sheer cliffs, the Wingsuit for rapid descents, and the “Buzzer” (a small, personal gyrocopter) for soaring over the dangerous landscape.
- Riding Elephants: A massive and highly marketed new addition. Players can unlock the ability to mount Kyrat’s elephants, using the majestic beasts as living tanks to smash through fortress gates, trample soldiers, and flip enemy vehicles.
- Fortresses: Taking the standard outpost system a step further, Fortresses are heavily guarded, massive strongholds belonging to Pagan Min’s regional commanders. Taking them down without raising the alarm is a true test of strategy and firepower.
- The Bait System: Players can harvest meat from fallen animals and toss it into enemy camps to instantly summon apex predators (like tigers, snow leopards, and bears), turning the local wildlife into an unpredictable weapon.
- Drop-in Co-op: The game introduced “Guns for Hire,” allowing a friend (playing as the returning character Hurk) to seamlessly drop into your open world to help clear outposts, fly around in buzzers, and cause general mayhem, though main story campaign missions are disabled during co-op play.
PC Version
The PC version is a visual treat. It originally launched with heavy Nvidia GameWorks integration that added incredibly realistic fur to the wildlife, enhanced volumetric lighting (god rays), and superior soft shadows. With modern hardware, players can push the game to 4K resolutions at blistering framerates, making the act of soaring over the Himalayas in a wingsuit an absolutely stunning and fluid experience.
Console Versions
As a cross-generation title, Far Cry 4 launched on both older hardware (PS3/Xbox 360) and the then-current generation (PS4/Xbox One). The PS4 and Xbox One versions delivered a crisp 1080p presentation at a locked 30 FPS, showcasing vibrant colors and impressive draw distances. Today, Xbox Series X|S owners get a massive upgrade by utilizing Microsoft’s backward-compatible FPS Boost feature, which effortlessly bumps the game up to a buttery-smooth 60 frames per second.
Quick Note
Far Cry 4 didn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it successfully took everything that made Far Cry 3 great and polished it to a mirror shine while giving players significantly more explosive toys to play with.
In short: If you want the classic Far Cry sandbox formula—but with the added joy of riding a war elephant while firing an M-79 grenade launcher—Kyrat is an unforgettable and gorgeous destination.
