Dead Bits is a 2014 indie first-person shooter and platformer developed and published by Microblast Games. Recognized for its intensely colorful, voxel-based aesthetic and aggressive dubstep soundtrack, the game is a bizarre, hyper-casual entry in the indie FPS market.

The narrative is intentionally paper-thin: players take on the role of Quilly, an ordinary block-man who is abruptly abducted by aliens and dropped into a hostile, cubic dimension. Armed with whatever geometric weaponry he can find, Quilly must run, jump, and shoot his way through hordes of blocky zombies, aliens, and robots to find his way back home.

Gameplay

Dead Bits combines traditional, old-school arena shooting with first-person platforming. The game is highly linear and extremely straightforward.

Key gameplay mechanics include:

  • Voxel Combat: The game features very basic, fast-paced shooting mechanics. Enemies are made entirely of blocks and explode into a shower of cubes when destroyed.
  • First-Person Platforming: Between combat arenas, players must navigate tricky platforming sections, jumping across floating blocks and avoiding environmental hazards like lava or bottomless pits.
  • Basic Arsenal: Players start with a standard pistol but can quickly acquire other weapons, such as a rapid-fire machine gun, a shotgun, and a rocket launcher, to deal with larger crowds of enemies.
  • The Dubstep Soundtrack: One of the most defining characteristics of the game is its original electronic/dubstep soundtrack, which constantly blasts in the background to match the neon, frantic energy of the levels.

Development and Legacy

Created by the Brazilian indie studio Microblast Games, Dead Bits was released in June 2014 during an era when Steam was being flooded with low-budget indie titles.

Within the PC gaming community, Dead Bits is highly infamous, but not necessarily for its gameplay. It is widely known as a “trading card farm” game. For years after its release, millions of digital keys for Dead Bits were given away for absolutely free across various websites, or bundled into packages that cost mere pennies. Consequently, millions of Steam users have the game in their libraries, having acquired it solely to let it idle in the background to earn Steam Trading Cards (which could be sold on the Steam Market for a few cents).

Because of this distribution strategy, the game accumulated tens of thousands of user reviews on Steam. The actual reception is highly mixed. While some players appreciate it as a harmless, 45-minute distraction with a catchy soundtrack, it is heavily criticized for its incredibly clunky platforming, poor enemy AI, lack of a save system, and overall feeling of being a hastily thrown-together student project. Today, it stands as a notorious artifact of the mid-2010s Steam economy.

Key Features:

  • Voxel Art Style — Explore a bright, colorful universe where everything—from the weapons to the enemies—is constructed out of destructible cubes.
  • Original Dubstep Score — Run and gun to an aggressive, heavy electronic soundtrack that defines the game’s chaotic atmosphere.
  • Bite-Sized Campaign — Experience a highly condensed, casual game that can be entirely completed in under an hour.
  • Run, Jump, and Shoot — Navigate a mix of fast-paced arena shooting and precarious first-person platforming challenges.
  • Steam Economy Legend — Own a piece of bizarre Steam history, infamous for its massive free key giveaways and trading card farming.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) via Steam — October 23, 2013
  • macOS — June 7, 2014
