Dark Reign: Battles of the Outer Rim is a highly obscure, deeply forgotten 1998 expansion pack for Auran’s brilliant 1997 real-time strategy game, Dark Reign: The Future of War.

However, unlike Rise of the Shadowhand (which was the massive, official expansion pack developed by Auran and published by Activision), Battles of the Outer Rim is a fascinating relic of a very specific, bygone era of PC gaming: the third-party “Authorized Add-On.” Developed and published by Macmillan Digital Publishing, this was not an official continuation of the story. Instead, it was essentially a retail package of custom maps and scenarios, officially licensed by Activision to be sold on store shelves to capitalize on the base game’s popularity.

If you remember games like D!Zone for Doom or the myriad of unofficial mission disks for Duke Nukem 3D and Command & Conquer, Battles of the Outer Rim falls into that exact same category.

Gameplay and Content

Because it was a third-party add-on, Battles of the Outer Rim did not introduce any brand-new unit models, engine upgrades, or new mechanics like the feral Xenite beasts from Shadowhand. It relied entirely on the assets provided in the base game’s incredibly robust map editor.

Key content and additions included:

  • 79 Multiplayer Maps: The absolute bulk of the CD-ROM was dedicated to custom multiplayer and skirmish maps. During the dial-up era, downloading custom maps off primitive fan sites could take hours. Macmillan solved this by compiling 79 meticulously tested, massive multiplayer maps into a single retail box.
  • The Map Browser: The game shipped with a custom launcher and a searchable map browser that allowed players to look up mini-reviews, resource layouts, and tactical information for each of the 79 maps before loading them into the Dark Reign engine.
  • Six Single-Player Missions: While light on narrative, Macmillan did include six brand-new, highly challenging single-player scenarios for veterans. There was one mission for the Imperium, one for the Freedom Guard, and most notably, four missions dedicated to the Tograns.
  • The Togran Focus: In the lore of the base game, the Tograns were an ancient, technologically advanced, pacifist society that was wiped out, leaving their technology behind to be scavenged. Battles of the Outer Rim was unique because it allowed players to actively command Togran forces in its custom scenarios, utilizing their lore-heavy units in actual combat.

Development and Legacy

Released late in 1998, Battles of the Outer Rim was a decent stocking stuffer for hardcore Dark Reign players whose dial-up internet couldn’t handle downloading custom maps. However, because it was released in the exact same year as the spectacular, official Rise of the Shadowhand expansion, it was vastly overshadowed.

Why buy a box of custom maps when the official expansion offered two entirely new playable factions and a massive new campaign? Consequently, Battles of the Outer Rim sold poorly and quietly faded into complete obscurity.

Today, it is pure abandonware. While you can easily buy the base game and the official Shadowhand expansion on digital storefronts like GOG.com today, Battles of the Outer Rim has never been digitally preserved. It remains a fascinating, highly elusive physical oddity for retro PC big-box collectors, representing the wild west of 90s third-party game development.

Key Features:

  • The Third-Party Add-On — Experience a classic example of 90s retail “shovelware,” featuring officially licensed but entirely community/third-party developed content.
  • Massive Map Roster — Expand your skirmish and multiplayer games with 79 brand-new, massive battlefields.
  • Command the Tograns — Play four unique single-player missions that put you in direct command of the ancient, heavily lore-based Togran faction.
  • Map Browser UI — Utilize a custom-built launcher to search, review, and filter through the massive list of multiplayer maps.
  • A Lost Relic — A highly obscure piece of strategy history that has never been digitally re-released, trapped entirely on 1998 CD-ROMs.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) — December 31, 1998
  • (Currently abandonware; strictly requires the original 1997 base game, Dark Reign: The Future of War, to run).
