Black & White 2
Black & White 2 is the 2005 sequel to the original god-simulation masterpiece, famously blending its predecessor’s divine interaction with a robust real-time strategy (RTS) and city-building framework. Developed by Lionhead Studios, it tasks you with saving the Greek people from the invading Aztec empire, but the methods you choose—total cultural dominance or bloody conquest—are entirely up to your moral alignment.
Unlike the first game, which focused heavily on individual tribal conversion, Black & White 2 is a game of vast empires, fortified walls, and large-scale warfare.
The Strategy of “Impressiveness”
The core expansion mechanic in Black & White 2 revolves around Impressiveness. While you can still conquer land by force, a “Good” god wins by building a city so magnificent that enemy villagers willingly emigrate to your domain.
- City Planning: Players must manage housing (Villas for Good, Hovels for Evil), roads, and decorative structures like fountains and gardens to boost their score.
- Zone of Influence: Your divine power is limited to a green “bubble” around your city. Constructing Impressive buildings near the border pushes this influence outward, allowing you to cast miracles and manipulate resources further into enemy territory.
- Infrastructure Management: You must balance your workforce between farmers (Grain), lumberjacks (Wood), and miners (Ore) while ensuring the population continues to breed in Nurseries.
The Evolution of the Creature
Your Creature returns as your primary physical avatar, but its AI is more focused and specialized than in the original title.
- Role Assignments: You can now toggle your creature into specific Roles such as Gatherer, Builder, or Entertainer, allowing it to automate tasks like collecting resources or dancing for villagers while you focus on high-level strategy.
- Combat Specialization: The creature serves as a “hero unit” on the battlefield, capable of smashing walls and decimating entire platoons with divine strikes like fireballs or heal miracles.
- Visual Morality: The creature’s physical form still morphs based on your training; a “Good” creature might become sleek and vibrant, while an “Evil” one develops cracked skin and glowing, jagged features.
Godly Warfare and Epic Miracles
A major departure for the sequel is the inclusion of direct military control. Players can now build Armories to recruit platoons of swordsmen and archers.
- Platoon Management: You can directly command units to defend walls or invade enemy territory, though soldiers are less effective than a well-trained Creature.
- Defensive Walls: For the first time, you can build massive, physics-based walls and gatehouses to protect your citizens from catapults and enemy creatures.
- Epic Wonders: Beyond standard miracles like Rain and Shield, you can construct massive Wonders to cast “Epic Miracles” such as Hurricanes, Earthquakes, and Volcanoes, capable of wiping out an entire enemy city in a single gesture.
Key Features
- Expanded City-Building — Design complex, beautiful, or terrifying cities using a variety of unique structures and road systems.
- Tactical Troop Control — Command platoons of archers and infantry to defend your borders or sack rival capitals.
- Advanced AI Learning — Teach your creature to handle the “micro-management” of the city, from building houses to entertaining the masses.
- The Tribute System — Earn “Tribute” by completing quests and challenges to unlock new buildings, miracles, and specialized creature toys.
- Stunning (for its time) Visuals — Features a highly detailed physics engine where trees can be uprooted, rocks can be shattered, and entire forests can be set ablaze.
Summary
Black & White 2 is a more structured, traditional strategy experience than the original, trading some of the first game’s experimental “tamagotchi” feel for the satisfaction of building and defending a massive empire. It remains one of the most unique “God-RTS” hybrids ever made, offering a visceral sense of power as you watch your city grow—or burn—under the command of your divine hand.
