Where to buy
Astro Bot is a 2024 3D platformer developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2024, it serves as a full-fledged, massive sequel to the beloved pack-in tech demo Astro’s Playroom. Serving as a grand celebration of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, the game was a massive critical and commercial success, widely hailed as one of the greatest and most joyful 3D platformers of the modern era.
Core Story
Astro and his crew are peacefully flying through space aboard their massive, PlayStation 5-shaped mothership when they are suddenly ambushed by a green alien menace known as Space Bully Nebulax. The alien rips the ship’s CPU out, causing the mothership to explode and scatter its core components—along with a crew of 300 smaller bots—across dozens of different galaxies.
Armed with a nimble Dual Speeder (shaped like a DualSense controller), Astro crash-lands on a desert planet that becomes the hub world. From there, he must explore over 80 wildly imaginative levels across various solar systems to defeat Nebulax’s lieutenants, recover the missing ship parts, and rescue his lost crew to put the PS5 mothership back together.
Gameplay and Features
Astro Bot is a masterclass in tight, inventive platforming, constantly throwing new mechanics at the player before moving on to the next fresh idea:
- DualSense Masterclass: Like its predecessor, the game is arguably the best showcase of the PS5’s controller. The haptic feedback is incredibly precise—you can literally feel the difference between Astro walking on sand, metal, snow, or glass. The adaptive triggers are heavily used for vehicle thrusters and specific power-ups.
- VIP Bots: Of the 300 bots you rescue, over 150 are “V.I.P. Bots” representing 30 years of PlayStation history. You will rescue everyone from first-party icons like Kratos, Aloy, and Nathan Drake to third-party legends like Crash Bandicoot, the Hunter from Bloodborne, and Kiryu from Yakuza.
- Hero Levels: After rescuing certain iconic VIPs, you unlock specialized levels that completely change the gameplay to mimic their franchise. For example, the God of War level gives Astro the Leviathan Axe and throws him into a frosty, Norse-themed puzzle-platforming challenge.
- Creative Power-Ups: Astro frequently equips heavily animated animal-themed power-ups. These include Barkster (a bulldog jetpack that lets you dash through walls), the Twin-Frog Gloves (for swinging across gaps and punching enemies from afar), and Handy Dandy (a monkey backpack used to scale walls).
- The Crash Site Hub: Rescuing bots isn’t just for a checklist. Back at the Crash Site, your rescued crew gathers around the hub. You must use them as a tiny, cheering army to lift heavy rocks, form bridges, or pull down walls to unlock hidden puzzle pieces and access new areas.
PC Version
As of early 2026, Astro Bot is not available on PC. Because the game’s entire identity is intrinsically tied to PlayStation iconography, and its mechanical gameplay is entirely built around the unique haptics and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller, porting it to PC presents a unique challenge. While Team Asobi director Nicolas Doucet mentioned around launch that a PC port could be possible if the community demand was loud enough, Sony has currently kept Astro strictly locked as their premier PS5 mascot.
Console Versions
Astro Bot is a strict PlayStation 5 exclusive and runs flawlessly on the hardware. It targets and holds a buttery-smooth 60 frames per second at a crisp 4K resolution. Thanks to the console’s SSD, loading times between the hub world, the galaxy map, and the individual levels are practically instantaneous, keeping the pacing incredibly fast and frictionless.
Quick Note
Astro Bot is a vibrant, endlessly creative love letter not just to PlayStation’s history, but to the pure, unadulterated fun of the video game medium as a whole.
In short: If you own a PS5, this is a mandatory, genre-defining title. It is a game that never stops smiling at you, rewarding exploration with incredible mechanics and nostalgic cameos around every single corner.
