Heroes of the Storm Adds First New Hero in Six Years
Heroes of the Storm has broken a long silence. At the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, Blizzard announced Xal’atath, the Harbinger of the Void, as the game’s first new playable hero since Hogger launched in 2020, snapping a six-year drought that many fans feared would never end.
From Maintenance Mode to New Content
The MOBA has technically remained online since Blizzard scaled back development, but meaningful updates stopped arriving after 2022. Since then, the team limited its work to light balance adjustments and bug fixes, leaving the roster frozen while the rest of the live-service landscape moved on. PC Gamer notes that this is the first truly substantial update the game has received since that maintenance mode announcement.
Who Is Xal’atath?
Xal’atath originates in World of Warcraft, where she debuted during the Legion expansion as a disembodied voice inhabiting the artifact weapon used by Shadow Priests. She has since grown into a much larger role, serving as the main villain of WoW’s current Midnight expansion arc. Bringing her into Heroes of the Storm connects the MOBA directly to one of Blizzard’s most active ongoing storylines, giving the character cross-game visibility at a moment when she is already prominent in the broader Warcraft universe.
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|
| Last new hero added (Hogger) | 2020 |
| Game shifted to maintenance mode | 2022 |
| Xal’atath PTR arrival | Monday (following BlizzCon announcement) |
| Xal’atath full release | September 28 |
What Comes Next
Blizzard did not stop at one announcement. The company also confirmed that at least one additional new hero is in the pipeline, though no name or release window was provided. According to PC Gamer, the teaser was brief but clear: more heroes are coming. Xal’atath will first appear on the game’s Public Test Realm before her scheduled September 28 launch, giving players a chance to test her kit ahead of the wider rollout.
Whether this marks a full reversal of the maintenance mode stance or a more measured return to occasional content drops remains to be seen. For a player base that has kept the game alive through years of minimal updates, even a single new hero landing after a six-year wait is a notable shift in direction.
