COD: MW4 DMZ Bug Spawns Players in Road, Gets Them Run Over
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ extraction mode opened to early access pre-order players overnight, and while initial impressions have been largely positive, one spawn-point bug has been cutting rounds brutally short before players can take a single step.
Spawning Into Oncoming Traffic
As Eurogamer reports, DMZ’s Hajin map uses multiple random spawn locations positioned near the edges of the map, giving players breathing room to plan their next move after landing. One of those spawn points, however, sits directly on a road used by enemy AI patrol vehicles. Players unlucky enough to land there can be struck and killed by a passing vehicle the moment they gain control of their character, with no opportunity to react.
Reddit user grillimperator managed to dodge out of the way just in time, but fellow Reddit user Deep-Operation-3552 had no such luck, hitting the ground immediately after the infil cutscene ended. To make the clip even more absurd, the in-game “Welcome to the DMZ” voice line played at the exact moment they were flattened.
Why This Bug Stings More Than Most
In most shooters, a frustrating death is an inconvenience. In DMZ, it carries real consequences. The mode’s persistent design means that everything a player brings into a match is lost if they die without recovering their gear. Getting run over twice by an AI patrol truck, as happened to at least one affected player according to Eurogamer, before the round even begins is a particularly punishing way to lose a carefully assembled loadout. DMZ does offer options to recover after being downed, but those tools are useless when a vehicle passes over a player twice in the opening seconds.
There also appears to be no spawn protection in place to prevent this kind of instant death scenario, which left players with no recourse whatsoever in the worst-case examples.
Infinity Ward Issues a Fix
The good news is that Infinity Ward moved quickly. A new DMZ patch has already addressed the problem, with the developer’s notes specifically citing “fixed some instances where enemy AI could run over players while infilling,” per Eurogamer. The spawn bug was listed among several issues corrected in that update.
Modern Warfare 4’s third and final mode, traditional multiplayer, goes live at the game’s full launch this Friday, October 23rd, across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2. Campaign reception has been strong in the meantime, with the title ranking among the better-received COD entries on Steam. One player has even completed the campaign on its hardest single-life difficulty mode, YOLO.
