Bethesda has put a name to its long-awaited RPG sequel, officially revealing The Elder Scrolls 6 as Sentinel and confirming the game is set in Hammerfell. The studio immediately tempered any excitement, however, posting on social media that “it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more” after the reveal.

A Name, a Location, and Not Much Else

The announcement ended years of near-total silence on the project, but it did not come loaded with gameplay details, a release window, or even a substantial trailer. According to PC Gamer, Bethesda’s follow-up social media post read: “Thank you for 40 years of shared memories. We can’t wait to make even more together with The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Development continues, and while it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more, it feels great to finally reveal the name and location with you.” The phrase “some time” is doing considerable heavy lifting there, and the studio offered no clarification on what it actually means in calendar terms.

Eight Years and Counting

The Elder Scrolls 6 was first announced in 2018, which means the project has been public knowledge for eight years without any substantive new information reaching fans. PC Gamer notes that eight years is roughly the same span of time Bethesda once used to produce Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, two Morrowind expansions, and two spinoff titles. Todd Howard had previously acknowledged that the 2018 announcement was essentially a holding gesture, made to answer the recurring fan question of whether a new Elder Scrolls was coming while Starfield remained the studio’s main focus. Howard even joked at one point that fans should “just pretend we didn’t announce it.”

Still More Than Two Years Out

Even with the name now confirmed, the finish line remains distant. Push Square reports that Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier stated on Bluesky that Sentinel is still more than two years away from launch. Schreier was careful to frame that not as a prediction but as something he knows, suggesting it comes from reporting rather than speculation. That timeline, combined with Bethesda’s own cautious language, points to a release that remains well beyond the near horizon.

Fan Reaction and What Comes Next

Reaction to the reveal has been mixed. While some fans welcomed finally having a name and confirmed setting after years of silence, Push Square highlights that disappointment followed the new trailer given how little concrete information it contained. For now, players eager to return to Tamriel will need to keep waiting, with Bethesda giving no indication of when the next meaningful update on Sentinel will arrive.
