Super Mario Galaxy is a 2007 platform video game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Wii. It is the eleventh mainline entry in the Super Mario series and the third fully 3D platformer after Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Widely regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made, Super Mario Galaxy revolutionized 3D platforming by introducing spherical “galaxy” levels with unique gravity mechanics that let Mario run on walls, ceilings, and entire planetoids as if they were flat ground. The game blends whimsical space exploration, precise platforming, and cinematic presentation into a joyful, family-friendly masterpiece.

The story begins during the Star Festival at Peach’s Castle. Bowser attacks, kidnaps Princess Peach, and hurls Mario into outer space. He awakens on the Comet Observatory, a living spaceship inhabited by the mysterious Rosalina and her child-like star creatures called Lumas. To rescue Peach and stop Bowser from creating a new galaxy of his own, Mario must travel across more than 40 unique galaxies, collecting 120 Power Stars that power the Observatory and allow him to confront the Koopa King in an epic final showdown. Along the way, players meet a colorful cast of allies, including the Lumas who can transform into new planets or power-ups, and even a playable Luigi after collecting enough stars.

Gameplay

Super Mario Galaxy is played from a third-person perspective with full 360-degree freedom of movement thanks to its revolutionary gravity system. Each galaxy is a self-contained playground of floating platforms, spinning planets, black holes, and zero-gravity sections. Mario’s core moveset — running, jumping, triple-jumping, and spinning — is enhanced by the Wii Remote: players point at the screen to collect Star Bits, tilt the controller to roll across spherical surfaces, and shake the Remote to perform a spin attack that defeats enemies and activates switches.

Dozens of power-ups change gameplay dramatically:

  • Bee Mushroom — allows Mario to fly and cling to honeycomb walls.
  • Spring Mushroom — turns Mario into a bouncing spring.
  • Fire Flower, Ice Flower, Rainbow Star (invincibility), and many more.

Levels range from simple planet-hopping to complex puzzle-platform challenges, boss battles against giant enemies, and speed-run comet stages. The game supports two-player cooperative play where a second player can control a second cursor to collect Star Bits and stun enemies. After completing the main story, players can replay galaxies as Luigi, who has slightly different physics and can reach new areas.

Development and Legacy

Directed by Yoshiaki Koizumi with producer Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario Galaxy was developed over four years as a launch title for the Wii. The team wanted to create a true 3D successor to Super Mario 64 while fully utilizing the Wii’s motion controls and family-friendly appeal. The soundtrack, composed by Mahito Yokota, Koji Kondo, and others, features a full orchestra and became one of gaming’s most beloved scores. The game’s visual style mixes realistic lighting with charming, cartoonish character designs, all rendered in 480p (upscaled and enhanced in later releases).

Upon release, Super Mario Galaxy received universal acclaim, winning multiple Game of the Year awards and selling over 12 million copies worldwide. It is frequently ranked in “greatest games of all time” lists for its creativity, innovation, and pure joy. A direct sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, arrived in 2010. In 2020 the original was faithfully remastered and included in Super Mario 3D All-Stars for Nintendo Switch, featuring widescreen support, optional gyro controls, and improved resolution and frame rate. The game remains a benchmark for 3D platformers and continues to inspire titles like Astro Bot, Super Mario Odyssey, and many indie games.
