Sprawl
Where to buy
SPRAWL is a 2023 fast-paced, retro-style first-person shooter (often categorized as a “boomer shooter”) developed by indie studio MAETH and published by Rogue Games (and later Kwalee). Heavily inspired by 90s cyberpunk anime like Ghost in the Shell and Akira, as well as modern movement shooters like Titanfall 2 and Doom Eternal, SPRAWL delivers a relentless, highly kinetic combat experience.
Set in an endless, dystopian megalopolis, the player takes on the role of SEVEN, a disgraced, cybernetically enhanced special-ops super-soldier. Guided by a mysterious AI voice in her head known only as “FATHER,” SEVEN must fight her way out of the walled city, carving a bloody path through the heavily militarized government forces of the Sprawl to uncover the dark secrets lurking within the Spire.
Gameplay
SPRAWL is designed around aggressive, momentum-based combat. Players are actively penalized for standing still, requiring constant movement, situational awareness, and quick reflexes to survive.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Fluid Wall-Running: SEVEN is equipped with cybernetic implants that allow her to seamlessly run along walls, transition between surfaces, and launch herself across massive gaps. The level design requires mastering this movement to flank heavily shielded enemies and traverse vertical combat arenas.
- Adrenaline System (Bullet Time): The core of the combat loop relies on an Adrenaline meter. By activating it, players enter “bullet time,” slowing down the action to easily line up mid-air headshots and dodge incoming projectiles.
- Aggressive Resource Management: Taking a page from Doom Eternal, players must actively hunt their enemies to survive. Hitting precise weak points (like an armored guard’s head) or dismembering foes causes them to drop excess adrenaline, health, and ammo. This actively fuels SEVEN’s rampage, allowing skilled players to stay in slow-motion for extended periods if they maintain their accuracy.
- Punchy Arsenal: The game features a brutal, retro-inspired arsenal, including dual-wielded pistols, a high-rate-of-fire SMG, a railgun, and an incredibly satisfying pump-action shotgun (which can be fired directly downward to “shotgun-jump” to higher platforms). She also wields a katana for bloody melee executions.
Development and Legacy
SPRAWL was developed by a very small indie team using Unreal Engine 4. The creators wanted to blend the grim, industrial aesthetic of classic 1990s cyberpunk media with the hyper-refined, fast-twitch combat loops of modern shooters. To match the game’s intensity, it features a pounding, dynamic industrial electronic soundtrack (composed by REVEL) that reacts directly to the player’s in-game actions.
Upon its initial launch on PC in August 2023, SPRAWL received a highly positive reception from the indie and retro-FPS community. Critics praised its incredible sense of speed, the visceral feedback of its weapons, and the addictive “flow state” achieved when perfectly combining wall-running with slow-motion headshots.
The game was later successfully ported to current-generation consoles in late 2024. Its success allowed MAETH to expand the universe, leading to the announcement of a follow-up title, Sprawl Zero, slated for late 2026, which shifts the perspective to a new cybernetic supersoldier named FIVE.
