Moonbreaker is the definitive “digital miniatures” strategy game that successfully translates the tactile joy of tabletop hobbyism into a competitive turn-based skirmisher. Developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment (the studio behind Subnautica) and published by Krafton, it features a rich sci-fi universe crafted by best-selling author Brandon Sanderson. It is a game designed to capture the “Friday night at the hobby shop” energy, complete with unboxing, meticulous painting, and high-stakes tactical combat.

Tabletop Tactics: The Gridless Battlefield

Unlike many of its contemporaries, Moonbreaker rejects the traditional square or hexagonal grid in favor of analog movement. Units can move anywhere within their specific range radius, allowing for precise positioning and a more fluid, tabletop-inspired feel.

  • The Captain & Crew: Each match begins with your chosen Captain on the field. You then utilize a resource called Cinder—which replenishes and grows each turn—to “bridge” (summon) additional members of your 10-unit roster onto the battlefield.
  • Positional Depth: The game utilizes a sophisticated cover system. Hard cover (like walls) completely blocks line-of-sight and projectiles, while soft cover (like tall grass) reduces enemy accuracy, forcing players to think carefully about unit orientation and LOS.
  • Ship Assists: Beyond your units, you have access to powerful Ship Assists—orbital abilities that do not cost Cinder but operate on long cooldowns, such as healing bursts or precision strikes.

The Hobby Room: A Professional Painting Suite

For many players, the combat is secondary to the Painting Tool. Moonbreaker features an incredibly deep digital painting suite that mimics real-world techniques like drybrushing, stippling, and washing.

  • Digital Freedom: While it captures the feel of an analog brush, it adds digital-only luxuries like an Undo button, auto-masking (to prevent paint from bleeding onto other parts of the mini), and custom palettes.
  • Community Expression: Players can share their custom paint jobs, and the game features alternate “professional” paint schemes created by the developers.
  • Audio Dramas: To enhance the painting experience, the game includes fully-voiced audio dramas written by Dan Wells, which players can listen to as they work on their miniatures.

The World of “The Reaches”

The setting, known as The Reaches, is a solar system where moons are held in orbit by a mysterious substance called Cinder. The lore is delivered through an unlockable Codex and the aforementioned audio dramas, detailing the conflict between diverse factions like the space-pirate Smugglers and the industrial Metas. This narrative depth provides a “living” backdrop to the 1v1 competitive matches and the single-player roguelike mode, Boss Run (formerly Cargo Run).

Key Features

  • Digital Miniature Experience — Collect, paint, and battle with beautifully detailed “miniatures” that rock on their bases and feature subtle, tabletop-style animations.
  • Fast-Paced 1v1 Skirmishes — Tactical matches designed to be quick to pick up but difficult to master.
  • Boss Run (Single-Player) — A roguelike adventure mode where you navigate procedurally generated encounters and upgrade your units.
  • Professional Painting Tools — High-end customization options including airbrushing and decals, supporting Wacom tablets for precision.
  • Sanderson-Crafted Lore — A deep, evolving sci-fi universe with persistent storytelling and ongoing seasonal content releases.
  • Full Release Fidelity — Since its full launch in 2024, the game has been optimized for high performance on both PC and Mac.

Summary

Moonbreaker is a love letter to the hobbyist. By removing the physical barriers of tabletop gaming—the cost of paint, the cleanup, and the space required—it makes the genre accessible while retaining its soulful, creative core. It is a game where your roster is as much an expression of your artistic style as it is your strategic prowess.
