Ground Control

Sierra
Ground Control is a 2000 real-time tactics (RTT) game developed by the Swedish studio Massive Entertainment and published by Sierra Studios. Releasing at a time when the strategy market was completely dominated by traditional, base-building juggernauts like StarCraft and Age of Empires II, Ground Control boldly stripped away resource gathering and base construction entirely. Instead, it delivered a pure, high-octane tactical combat experience rendered in a revolutionary, fully 3D engine.
The narrative is set in the 25th century, centuries after a devastating global conflict known as the “Sixteen-Minute War” left Earth in ruins. Humanity rebuilt under the absolute rule of massive, interstellar mega-corporations. The story focuses on a brutal war between two of these factions: the secular, militaristic Crayven Corporation, and the fanatical, religious cult-turned-corporation known as the Order of the New Dawn. The two superpowers clash over the distant, desolate planet of Krig-7b, ostensibly to secure valuable territory, but secretly to unearth ancient, highly advanced alien xenofacts hidden beneath the surface.
Gameplay
Ground Control completely revolutionized the genre by shifting the focus from macro-economic management to micro-tactical battlefield supremacy. If you lost a tank, you couldn’t just build another one back at base; you had to make do with what you had left.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Pre-Mission Loadouts: Before a mission begins, players are given a set amount of requisition points to assemble their forces. You customize individual squads—ranging from standard riflemen and heavy anti-tank infantry to hover-tanks and aerodynes (aircraft)—choosing their specific weapons, armor types, and secondary equipment (like medkits or orbital strikes).
- The Dropship: Once your loadout is locked in, your forces are deployed onto the battlefield via massive orbital dropships. What you bring into the mission is generally all you have; managing the survival of your veteran squads is paramount.
- True 3D Tactics: The game featured a freely rotatable, fully zoomable 3D camera, which was highly innovative for the year 2000. This wasn’t just for show; the 3D terrain heavily dictated combat. Units on high ground received massive accuracy and sight-line bonuses, while units in valleys were highly vulnerable.
- Directional Armor and Suppression: Combat was highly lethal and realistic. Vehicles had heavily armored fronts but highly vulnerable rear and side plating, making flanking maneuvers essential. Additionally, sustained heavy fire would “suppress” infantry, forcing them to hit the dirt and severely reducing their combat effectiveness, allowing other squads to move in for the kill.
- Friendly Fire: You could not simply blanket an area in artillery while your troops were engaged. Friendly fire was always on, requiring precise positioning and careful use of heavy ordnance.
Development and Legacy
As the debut game from Massive Entertainment, Ground Control was a staggering achievement. Upon its release in June 2000, it received widespread critical acclaim. Reviewers were blown away by the incredible visual fidelity of the 3D engine, the cinematic camera controls, and the deeply strategic, rock-paper-scissors unit balancing that punished reckless frontal assaults.
Later that same year, Massive released an expansion pack titled Ground Control: Dark Conspiracy, which added a new faction (the Phoenix mercenaries), new environments, and a challenging 15-mission campaign that continued the story of the Crayven Corporation’s Major Sarah Parker.
The success of the original game spawned a direct sequel, Ground Control II: Operation Exodus, in 2004. However, the true legacy of Ground Control is the foundational DNA it provided for the studio’s magnum opus: 2007’s World in Conflict. By proving that players didn’t need to harvest gold or build barracks to enjoy a deep strategy game, Massive Entertainment carved out an entirely new sub-genre of real-time tactics.
