Grey Goo: Emergence is a 2015 downloadable mini-campaign for Grey Goo, the critically acclaimed traditional real-time strategy game developed by Petroglyph Games (a studio famously founded by the original Westwood Studios veterans who created Command & Conquer).
While the base game of Grey Goo revitalized the classic, macro-heavy, 90s-style RTS formula, it left players with a massive cliffhanger regarding the fate of one of its most beloved characters. Released a few months after the base game, Emergence is a focused, three-mission DLC designed specifically to bridge the narrative gap between the original campaign and the eventual arrival of a terrifying, galaxy-ending threat.
The Narrative: Assimilation and The Shroud
The storyline of Emergence picks up immediately after the devastating explosion at the “Terminal” during the base game’s Human campaign.
In the original story, Singleton—a highly advanced, sentient human AI housed in a robotic body—sacrifices himself by detonating a massive bridge to stop the encroaching tide of the Grey Goo. However, Emergence reveals that Singleton was not destroyed. Instead, his artificial consciousness was absorbed and assimilated into the Goo’s sprawling, nanobot hive-mind.
Rather than being erased, Singleton retains his individuality. Through his new connection to the collective, he discovers the massive plot twist of the franchise: the Grey Goo is not a mindless, malevolent swarm bent on galactic destruction. It is actually a desperate, highly evolved defense mechanism running in terror from an incomprehensibly powerful alien faction known as The Shroud. The Goo was consuming planets not out of malice, but to gather enough mass to fight back against this impending cosmic apocalypse.
Gameplay and Mechanical Additions
Because Emergence is a story-focused DLC rather than a massive mechanical overhaul, it relies on the incredibly unique, highly asymmetrical faction mechanics of the base game. You play the campaign entirely from the perspective of the Goo.
Key gameplay features and additions include:
- The First Hero Unit: Grey Goo heavily avoided “super-units” in its base game, but Emergence introduced Singleton as the franchise’s very first playable, Hero-tier unit. Now a massive, heavily modified combat chassis acting as the physical avatar for the Goo, Singleton boasts devastating unique abilities and must be carefully micromanaged to survive the campaign.
- Asymmetrical Goo Mechanics: Playing as the Goo is unlike any other RTS faction. You do not build a base. Your “base” is a massive, gelatinous Mother Protean that physically roams the map, sitting on resource vents to absorb energy. To build an army, the Mother Protean physically splits itself into smaller chunks of sludge, which then morph into heavily armored assault units or artillery blobs anywhere on the battlefield.
- Three Narrative Missions: The campaign consists of three highly challenging, scripted missions (“Termination,” “Awakening,” and “Unification”) that force players to master the hit-and-run, base-less tactics of the Goo.
- Axis Animation Cinematics: Petroglyph heavily prioritized the game’s presentation, returning to the award-winning Axis Animation Studio to create six brand-new, breathtaking CGI cutscenes to tell Singleton’s tragic story.
Development and Legacy
Released in June 2015, Emergence was praised by the core Grey Goo community for finally answering lingering lore questions and giving players direct control of Singleton. While some critics noted that three missions felt a bit brief, the high quality of the CGI cutscenes and the challenging map design justified the tight package.
More importantly, Emergence served as the crucial stepping stone for the franchise’s future. By formally introducing the looming threat of the Shroud through Singleton’s eyes, the DLC perfectly set the stage for the massive 2016 expansion, Descent of the Shroud, which finally introduced the terrifying alien race as a fully playable fourth multiplayer faction.
Today, Emergence is no longer sold separately. Petroglyph and publisher Grey Box bundled all the game’s post-launch content, including this mini-campaign, into the Grey Goo: Definitive Edition, ensuring that modern players get the complete, unbroken narrative right out of the box.
