Glitchpunk is an indie top-down action game developed by Dark Lord and published by Daedalic Entertainment. It initially launched in Steam Early Access in August 2021 before finally reaching its 1.0 release on October 16, 2024, for PC. It is an unapologetic, heavily stylized homage to the classic, top-down era of Grand Theft Auto (specifically GTA 1 and GTA 2), wrapped tightly in a neon-soaked, dystopian cyberpunk aesthetic.

Core Concept and Story

The game is set in a grim, sex-and-drug-fueled future governed by hyper-capitalist megacorporations, religious cults, and hyper-violent street gangs. The narrative explores heavy themes of transhumanism and xenophobia.

You play as an android bounty hunter who possesses a rare defect simply known as the “glitch.” This anomaly allows you to bypass your core programming, giving you free will. Armed with this newfound autonomy, you navigate through four distinct, post-nuclear cities (ranging from a desert outpost in Texas to a cyberpunk vision of Soviet Russia), taking on contracts, manipulating rival gang leaders, and ultimately deciding whether to uphold the tyrannical status quo or burn it all to the ground.

Gameplay and Features

If you have ever played the original 1999 Grand Theft Auto 2, the mechanical DNA of Glitchpunk will feel instantly familiar, albeit injected with sci-fi elements:

  • Top-Down Mayhem: The game is viewed from a classic bird’s-eye perspective. You navigate the city streets on foot or by hijacking a massive variety of vehicles, including motorcycles, buses, trucks, and even tanks.
  • The Hacking System: Because you are an android, combat isn’t strictly limited to firearms and melee weapons. You can use specialized modules to hack the environment, pedestrians, or enemies mid-combat to cause distractions or turn them against each other.
  • Factions and Choices: The city is split among 12 different gangs and factions. Completing jobs for one gang will raise your reputation with them while actively making you a target for their rivals, forcing you to carefully manage allegiances.
  • The Wanted System: It wouldn’t be a GTA clone without police chases. Glitchpunk features a massive 10-tier wanted level system. Causing too much chaos escalates the police response from standard beat cops up to heavily armed corporate death squads.
  • The Soundtrack: The game features a robust in-game radio system with futuristic beats produced by global artists, interspersed with satirical news broadcasts and absurd cyberpunk commercials.

Reception and State of the Game

While Glitchpunk boasts an incredible art style (blending 2D character sprites with 3D environments) and a fantastic premise, its execution left a lot to be desired. It currently sits at a “Mixed” user rating on Steam.

When it launched in Early Access, it suffered from severe performance issues, massive bugs, and incredibly clunky driving mechanics. While the developers spent a few years patching the game leading up to its official 1.0 release in late 2024, many players felt the final product still lacked the necessary polish. Critics frequently noted that while the aesthetic and the GTA 2 nostalgia hit the mark perfectly, the actual combat and driving simply felt too stiff and frustrating to remain enjoyable for a full playthrough.

Quick Note

Glitchpunk is a highly ambitious, visually striking love letter to late-90s top-down sandbox games.

In short: It absolutely nails the gritty, neon-drenched atmosphere of a cyberpunk dystopia. However, you have to be willing to look past some serious mechanical clunkiness and Eurojank-style bugs to truly enjoy the retro chaos it offers.
