Fable (often referred to as Fable 2026 or the Fable Reboot) is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by Playground Games—with support from Eidos-Montréal—and published by Xbox Game Studios. Set to launch in Autumn 2026, it is a highly anticipated, ground-up reboot of the beloved franchise originally created by Lionhead Studios.

Set in the whimsical, fairy-tale world of Albion, the new Fable acts as a fresh start for the series rather than a direct continuation of Fable III (2010) or The Journey (2012). Players step into the shoes of a customizable Hero whose journey begins with a localized tragedy—their grandmother and village are mysteriously turned to stone. Guided by Humphry, a cynical, retired former Hero (voiced by comedian Matt King), players must venture out into a massive, breathtaking open world to master their powers, confront mythical beasts, and deal with rival, morally corrupt “Heroes.”

Gameplay

Playground Games has taken the core pillars that defined the original Fable games—player choice, a dynamic social sandbox, and fluid combat—and modernized them using the powerful ForzaTech engine.

Key gameplay mechanics include:

  • The Social Sandbox: Fable features a highly ambitious “Living Population” system. Albion is populated by over 1,000 individually handcrafted, fully voiced NPCs. Players can interact with every single one of them—you can flirt, get married, have children, hire them, or antagonize them.
  • Nuanced Morality and Reputation: The classic good/evil morality system returns but is significantly more nuanced. How the townspeople react to you is no longer just a black-and-white sliding scale; NPCs have unique worldviews and will judge you based on specific actions. If you buy up every property in Bowerstone to become a greedy landlord, the population will react accordingly.
  • Fluid Combat Trinity: Combat allows players to seamlessly and rapidly switch between melee strikes, ranged attacks (bows), and magical spells during encounters. You can knock enemies off balance with heavy sword attacks, snipe armored weak points, and summon devastating lightning storms.
  • Real Estate and Economy: Every house in the game can be entered, and continuing the franchise’s tradition, players can buy residential properties and businesses to build a vast real-estate empire and amass wealth.

Development and Legacy

Rumors of a Fable revival circulated for years before it was officially announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020. Microsoft handed the reins to Playground Games—the studio universally acclaimed for the Forza Horizon series. The studio wanted to step outside the racing genre and build their own authentic vision of Albion rather than simply making “Fable 4.”

A major focus for the development team was retaining the franchise’s signature dry, irreverent British humor. To achieve this, the game features prominent UK comedians, most notably Richard Ayoade, who plays “Dave,” a disgruntled, giant vegetable farmer who takes a dim view of pesky “Heroes” ruining his crops.

The game’s development timeline has been closely watched by fans. Originally targeting a 2025 release window, Xbox Game Studios Head Craig Duncan announced in early 2025 that the game was being delayed to 2026 to ensure Playground Games had the time to polish its massive, interactive world. Furthermore, in early 2026, Microsoft announced a major shift for the title: Fable would not be strictly exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem, but would launch simultaneously on the PlayStation 5, marking one of the biggest moves in Xbox’s recent multiplatform strategy.
