Xbox Shows 18 Minutes of Fable Gameplay at Gamescom
Xbox has unveiled an 18-minute gameplay demonstration for Fable during Gamescom, giving audiences the most detailed look at Playground Games’ reboot to date. The footage covers the capital city of Bowerstone, combat systems, quests, and confirms a release window that has already seen one delay.
Bowerstone and Its 400 Residents
According to Video Games Chronicle, the demonstration is narrated by Playground Games art director Conar Cross. Much of the footage takes place inside Bowerstone, where the player character visits an owned house shared with a spouse and child. The city is home to 400 NPCs, each assigned their own home, hobbies, personality traits, and full voice acting. Players can speak with and interact with all of them, suggesting a level of world density the series has not previously attempted at this scale.
Combat, Spells, and Quests
The footage also touches on Fable’s combat design. The classic Strength, Skill, and Will system from the original games returns in a revised form, preserving the familiar split between melee, ranged, and magic playstyles. Xbox Wire confirmed a list of spells that testers were able to use: Fireball, Lightning, Blade, Lift, Rush, Push, and Befowl. The demo additionally showcases a quest called The Last of the Greats, which involves a character named Humphry the Golden, though further story details were not disclosed.
Release Date and Prior Delay
As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Fable is now scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027. The title was previously pushed back to 2027 due to concerns around competition with GTA 6.
