Fable Survived Xbox Layoffs Because It’s ‘Vital to the DNA’
Playground Games director Ralph Fulton has opened up about how the long-in-development Fable RPG managed to survive repeated waves of Xbox layoffs and studio closures, telling The Guardian that the franchise holds a unique place within Microsoft’s gaming strategy that kept the project alive through nearly a decade of turbulence.
A Development Spanning an Era of Chaos
According to IGN, Playground Games began assembling the Fable team in 2017, just one year after Microsoft shut down Lionhead Studios, the original creator of the series. In the years that followed, Xbox went on a buying spree, acquiring studios like Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory, and spending $7.5 billion on Bethesda and $68.7 billion on Activision Blizzard. Many of those same studios were later hit hard by layoffs or closed outright.
The damage was significant. In January 2024, Xbox cut 1,900 positions, largely from Activision Blizzard. Later that year, at least 650 more staff were let go and Arkane Austin was shut down. In 2025, Microsoft eliminated 9,000 roles company-wide as it redirected spending toward AI, ending work on Everwild at Rare after more than a decade and wiping out The Initiative, the studio that had spent seven years trying to reboot Perfect Dark without releasing anything. This year brought another round of cuts under new Xbox boss Asha Sharma, with the total expected to reach 3,200 workers and serious uncertainty now hanging over Arkane Lyon.
Why Fable Was Different
Fulton offered a direct answer to why Fable avoided the same fate. “What has protected us over a long development cycle is that so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform,” he said, as reported by IGN. He also argued the game carries importance beyond just Xbox, saying it offers “a combination of elements that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else” in the broader games industry.
Fable sits alongside Halo, Forza, and Gears of War as one of Xbox’s few legacy brands that Microsoft has consistently treated as platform cornerstones. That status, combined with the financial stability Playground Games maintained by continuing to release the popular Forza Horizon series throughout Fable’s development, appears to have given the studio the runway it needed.
Release Date and What Comes Next
| Game | Developer | Release Date |
|---|---|---|
| Fable | Playground Games | February 23, 2027 |
The new Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, according to IGN. After close to ten years of development through one of the most volatile periods in Xbox’s history, the game is now approaching the finish line. Whether it can meet the expectations that come with that long a wait, and that much corporate upheaval around it, remains to be seen.
