Dungeons & Dragons – Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator

Dungeons & Dragons – Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator is a 1993 cult-classic strategy game that served as a “weird and wonderful” pioneer of the fantasy city-building genre. Developed by Stormfront Studios and originally published by SSI, it is often overshadowed by Firefly Studios’ 2001 Stronghold series, but it remains a distinct “indirect control” masterpiece set in the legendary D&D world.
Unlike most RTS games of the era, it focuses on the “Lord” phase of a D&D character’s career—where you retire from dungeon-crawling to establish and defend a burgeoning empire.
The Indirect Command Loop
Stronghold utilizes a unique “Neighborhood” system. You start with a party of up to five leaders, each of whom builds their own Keep at a chosen location on the map. These Keeps act as central hubs for specialized neighborhoods, which grow and attract settlers based on your management.
- Priority Pyramids: Instead of clicking on individual peasants, you manage your population through a “Control Pyramid” for each screen. By sliding a pyramid on the UI, you set the percentage of your workforce dedicated to Recruiting, Training, or Building.
- The “Magnet” System: Movement is handled by placing “Magnets” on the map to draw your autonomous units toward specific locations, such as a monster den or a new construction site.
- Resource Juggling: You must balance Gold and Food while managing the specific needs of your residents, who will vocalize their complaints if the kingdom lacks housing or security.
Classes, Races, and Alignment
The game integrates core D&D rules into its civic management, where your choice of leaders dictates the strengths of your kingdom:
- Specialized Infrastructure: Different classes unlock unique building types. Dwarves are superior miners who find more ore in rocks; Halflings are exceptional farmers who maximize food production; and Elves provide a hybrid of magical and military utility.
- Alignment-Based Victory: Your chosen alignment at the start of the game fundamentally changes your winning condition:
- Lawful: You must rise through the ranks to become the Emperor by reaching specific population and resource milestones.
- Chaotic: Your goal is total annihilation of all rival strongholds and monster dens.
- Neutral: You must achieve both imperial status and military dominance.
Monsters and the Hostility Scale
The world of Stronghold is populated by AI-controlled monster factions that range from mindless vermin to highly intelligent rival kingdoms:
- Mindless Foe: Creatures like giant ants or scorpions wander the map aimlessly but can quickly overrun a poorly defended farm.
- The Intelligent Rival: Advanced foes, such as the sorcerer Mindark, will build their own strongholds, manage resources, and launch coordinated military campaigns against you.
- Difficulty Scaling: At the start of a game, you can set the “Hostility Level,” which determines the number and strategic intelligence of these enemy kingdoms.
Key Features
- Pioneering 3D Panorama — Switch between a strategic “triangular wireframe” map and a panoramic “panorama view” to inspect your buildings and units.
- Persistent Unit XP — While the main leaders don’t level up, every unit in your kingdom can gain experience through training or combat, becoming a formidable veteran force.
- Random Map Generator — Beyond five pre-constructed worlds, the game features a robust random map engine for high replayability.
- Seasonal Management — Food production fluctuates with the seasons; you must store enough grain in summer and fall to survive the lean winter months.
- D&D Licensed Lore — Features iconic spells, items, and monsters directly from the 2nd Edition AD&D ruleset.
Summary
Dungeons & Dragons – Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator is a sophisticated “management RTS” that was decades ahead of its time. By focusing on the administrative and political weight of being a fantasy lord, it created a gameplay loop that values long-term planning and architectural strategy over rapid clicking. It remains a fascinating artifact of the “Gold Box” era, now easily accessible on modern PCs.
