Dune: Spice Wars is a 2023 real-time 4X strategy game developed by Shiro Games (the studio behind the critically acclaimed Northgard) and published by Funcom. Returning to the harsh desert planet of Arrakis for the first time in nearly two decades, this game completely sidesteps the fast-paced, high-APM base-building of the legendary Westwood Studios Dune games. Instead, Spice Wars masterfully blends the tactical combat of an RTS with the massive, overarching macro-management, politics, and espionage of a grand-strategy 4X game (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate).

Releasing amidst the massive cultural resurgence of the franchise driven by Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster films, the game adopts a slightly stylized, almost comic-book-esque art direction, allowing it to carve out its own distinct visual identity separate from the movies while strictly honoring Frank Herbert’s original lore.

Gameplay and Mechanical Overhauls

Spice Wars is a game of balancing spinning plates. It operates in real-time, but at a much slower, more deliberate pace than traditional RTS games, allowing players to pause or fast-forward time to manage their sprawling empires.

Key gameplay mechanics and innovations include:

  • The Spice Economy: Harvesting the invaluable Spice Melange is your primary objective, but you do not just spend it to build tanks. Every month, you must pay a strict “Imperial Tax” (or a bribe to the Spacing Guild, depending on your faction). Any surplus Spice can be sold on the fluctuating CHOAM market for Solari (gold) to fund your military and infrastructure. If you miss your tax quota, your political standing plummets, and you risk facing the wrath of the Emperor’s Sardaukar.
  • Survival on Arrakis: The planet itself is your greatest enemy. Expanding your borders requires massive amounts of Water and Authority. Venturing too far into the deep desert will cause your military units to suffer severe attrition from the heat and lack of supplies.
  • The Sandworms: The apex predators return in terrifying fashion. Rhythmic vibrations from moving armies, fighting, or active Spice Harvesters will attract massive Sandworms. You must actively monitor seismic warnings and manually recall your Harvesters via Carryalls, or watch them instantly disappear into the maw of a Leviathan.
  • Politics and Espionage: Brute force is rarely enough. Players regularly convene in the Landsraad, using their political influence and votes to pass sweeping global resolutions that can cripple rivals’ economies or buff their own. Simultaneously, you must assign agents to a deep espionage board to assassinate enemy leaders, sabotage bases, or steal CHOAM shares.

The Factions

The game features deeply asymmetrical factions fighting for control of the spice trade, each with unique victory conditions and playstyles:

  • House Atreides: The honorable politicians. They excel at diplomacy, passing Landsraad resolutions, and uniquely possess the ability to peacefully annex neutral villages over time without shedding blood.
  • House Harkonnen: The brutal oppressors. They thrive on fear, utilizing a unique “Oppression” mechanic to drastically increase village production at the cost of rebellions. Their military is cheap, disposable, and utterly ruthless.
  • The Smugglers: The parasitic opportunists. Instead of painting the map, they can build secret black-market underworld headquarters beneath the villages of their rivals, leeching resources and organizing rebellions from the shadows.
  • The Fremen: The native desert warriors. They completely ignore Imperial politics and CHOAM markets. They require significantly less water, do not use Carryalls to save their Harvesters, and uniquely possess the ability to ride the Sandworms to rapidly redeploy across the map.
  • House Corrino: Added during Early Access, the Imperial House itself enters the fray. They rely on massive taxes levied against the other factions, incredibly heavily armored bases, and their elite, terrifying Sardaukar legions.
  • House Ecaz & House Vernius of Ix: Later additions to the game (the latter via DLC) introduced the deeply cultured, alliance-focused House Ecaz and the highly technological, patent-hoarding cyborgs of House Vernius, further shaking up the political meta.

Development and Legacy

Spice Wars entered Early Access on PC in April 2022, allowing Shiro Games to work closely with the community for over a year to refine the complex political and economic balance. It officially launched its 1.0 version in September 2023.

The reception was highly positive. Strategy fans praised how successfully Shiro Games managed to translate the intricate, multi-layered political backstabbing of Frank Herbert’s novels into actual gameplay mechanics. Unlike classic RTS games where the only path to victory is destroying the enemy base, Spice Wars allows you to win by achieving Hegemony (cultural dominance), buying out the CHOAM market, getting elected as the Governor of Dune, or sending an assassin to silently slit your opponent’s throat.

Today, Spice Wars stands as a brilliant, cerebral return to Arrakis, proving that the strategy genre has evolved far beyond the simple “tank rush” mechanics that the original Dune II birthed three decades ago.

Key Features:

  • Real-Time 4X Strategy — Experience a deep, slower-paced blend of grand strategy and real-time tactical combat, managing resources, borders, and armies simultaneously.
  • Rule the Landsraad — Dominate your rivals not just with weapons, but by manipulating the political assembly of the Landsraad and passing devastating global resolutions.
  • Multi-Layered Espionage — Assign agents to spy on factions, steal technology, or orchestrate elaborate assassinations to decapitate rival Houses.
  • Asymmetrical Warfare — Master completely distinct playstyles, from the brute force of the Harkonnen and the diplomacy of the Atreides to the native desert survival of the Fremen.
  • Survive Arrakis — Battle the harshest environment in gaming, managing water supplies, avoiding massive sandstorms, and escaping the ever-present threat of the Sandworms.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) — September 14, 2023 (Following Early Access in 2022)
  • Xbox Series X|S — November 28, 2023
