Dominions 5: Warriors of the Faith (commonly abbreviated as Dominions 5 or Dom5) is a critically acclaimed turn-based fantasy grand strategy 4X video game developed and published by the independent Swedish studio Illwinter Game Design. Released on November 27, 2017, for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux, the title represents a defining evolutionary leap in the mechanical history of the franchise.
While previous iterations primarily scaled the scope of the universe by injecting chronological eras, hundreds of distinct magic sites, and thousands of unit chassis, Dominions 5 fundamentally re-engineered the underlying simulation engine.
By dismantling sequential turn-based combat in favor of simultaneous real-time tactical battle resolutions, introducing a granular, highly customizable bless design matrix, and adding a multi-tier physical bottleneck to fortress production through Recruitment Points, the title achieved widespread praise as the most refined and tactically fluid iteration of the series.

The Granular Bless Matrix Overhaul
The absolute crown jewel of mechanical progression in Dominions 5 was the total destruction of the old, rigid Blessing System. In older titles, investing points into a Pretender God’s magical paths merely rewarded their “Sacred” holy units with static, unalterable stat injections (such as Level 9 Fire granting a boring, uniform fire weapon modifier).
Dominions 5 replaced this framework with a highly sophisticated, points-driven Bless Design Forge. When players build their custom deity, their chosen magic path ranks translate directly into a pool of spendable Bless Points belonging to that elemental sphere. Players use these points to select specialized, highly thematic mechanical buffs tailored explicitly to their overarching military doctrine:
- Passive Blessings: Minor utility or structural defense enhancements that are permanently active on your sacred units from turn one—such as Farwalker (+movement speed) or Resist Magic (+baseline magic defense metrics).
- Incarnate Blessings: Incredibly high-tier, game-altering abilities that only activate when your Pretender God is physically awake and wandering the overworld map. If your god is unawakened or dead, these blessings go completely offline. Examples include Twist Fate (completely negating the very first damage type a unit receives in battle), Blood Bond (distributing damage across a local unit squad to prevent individual soldiers from getting instantly sniped), or Regeneration (recharging raw HP metrics turn-by-turn).
Pseudo-Real-Time Automated Battles
Interstellar and localized provincial warfare completely abandoned the sequential, turn-based movement arrays of the past. In Dominions 4, automated combat calculations executed actions tile-by-tile, causing armies to awkwardly stand still while waiting for individual square pathways to clear.
Dominions 5 integrated a Simultaneous Movement Tactical Engine. When viewing a pre-scripted battle replay playback between turns, every single unit, arrow, fireball, and lightning bolt maneuvers across the hex arena concurrently on an active global clock.
This altered tactical scripting entirely. Archers no longer blindly fire at static squares; they must actively lead moving targets, making high-velocity flying units immensely effective at diving past heavy frontlines to shatter squishy backline mages before an early-stage protection ward can even be cast.
Furthermore, combat introduced Permanent Battle Afflictions that dynamically track unit survival history: an elite commander surviving a close-quarters engagement might emerge with a permanent limp (slowing their movement velocity), a blinded eye (halving their combat accuracy), or a chest wound that causes them to accrue fatigue points faster during prolonged wars of attrition.
Triple-Resource Logistics: Recruitment Points
To prevent a dominant mid-game player from effortlessly mass-producing monolithic columns of hyper-armored elite knights or heavy giant legions from a single capital fortress every single turn, Illwinter added a strict logistical bottleneck: Recruitment Points (RP).
Domestic production is no longer constrained entirely by liquid Gold and raw physical Materials. Every independent province card generates a fixed number of Recruitment Points based on its localized civilian population density and current unrest scales.
When a player enters the unit recruitment ledger, every soldier tracks an explicit RP footprint alongside their gold and resource costs. Heavy, elite units devour massive amounts of Recruitment Points to replicate the intensive training times required to build functional cadres, while cheap tribal militias require trivial RP points.
This creates a beautiful macro-level friction: even if your treasury is overflowing with hundreds of gold coins, a small frontier fortress might only possess enough baseline Recruitment Points to manufacture three elite heavy cavalry units per turn. This forces players to either diversify their military infrastructure by building expensive fort networks across multiple adjacent sectors, or weave cheap auxiliary skirmishers into their armies to bolster frontline numbers.
Modern Preservation Status
The long-term health and stability of Dominions 5: Warriors of the Faith stands as an absolute triumph of community loyalty and developer care. While Illwinter Game Design has since expanded the franchise with the subsequent rollout of Dominions 6, Dominions 5 remains actively distributed and heavily preserved on the Steam platform for a standard retail baseline price of $39.99, frequently featuring steep discounts during seasonal strategy sales.
Because the underlying engine was natively architected from day one around object-oriented 64-bit API layers and robust multithreaded coding logic, the software installs and executes flawlessly out-of-the-box under modern 64-bit Windows 11 architectures. No external emulators, legacy wrappers, or compatibility modifications are required.
The digital client includes complete native support for contemporary high-resolution widescreen monitors, scaled user interface font layouts, full Steam Workshop connectivity for community total-conversion mods, and perfectly active multiplayer server pipelines—allowing contemporary strategy grognards to experience the immense custom bless creations, human blood sacrifices, and simultaneous combat replay clips with absolute technical perfection.
