Conquest: Frontier Wars

Conquest: Frontier Wars is a 2001 space-based real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Fever Pitch Studios and published by Ubi Soft. Releasing during the golden age of PC strategy games, it carved out a dedicated cult following by introducing incredibly ambitious, macro-level mechanics—such as multi-map warfare and deep supply chain management—that were years ahead of their time.
The narrative is set in the distant future after humanity discovers how to navigate the universe using stable wormholes. As the Terran navy expands its borders into the unknown, they violently collide with the Mantis, a hostile, swarming insectoid race. The conflict quickly escalates into a massive interstellar war that eventually draws in a highly advanced, energy-based third faction known as the Celareons.
Gameplay
While Conquest: Frontier Wars is played on a 2D plane (similar to Star Trek: Armada or StarCraft), its strategic scope is massively expanded beyond a single battlefield.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Interconnected Systems: You do not just fight on one map. A single match can take place across up to 16 completely separate star systems simultaneously, all connected by wormholes. You must jump your camera between different systems to manage multiple fronts, secure chokepoints, and fortify wormhole entrances.
- Supply Lines: This is the defining mechanic of the game. Ships rely on an active supply system to function. If a fleet ventures too far from a friendly headquarters or a supply ship, they will run out of ammunition and effectively become useless in combat. Building supply platforms and protecting your logistical lines is just as important as building heavy cruisers.
- Fleet Admirals: To help manage the chaos of multi-system warfare, players can assign “Admirals” to command their fleets. These act as hero units with unique personalities, AI traits, and passive buffs (like increased shield regeneration). You can assign an Admiral a general task (like defending a system) and they will competently manage the fleet while you focus your attention on another map.
- The Three Factions: The game features three highly distinct races with unique economies:
- Terrans: A balanced, heavily armored faction relying on traditional navies, missile cruisers, and fighter carriers.
- Mantis: A swarming, insectoid faction that relies heavily on massive numbers of medium-armored ships and requires “Crew” (harvested from colonized planets) as a primary resource.
- Celareons: A highly advanced, mysterious energy race that relies on stealth, superior shields, and harvesting gas.
- Base Building: Players construct orbital headquarters, shipyards, and research stations around colonizable planets, defending them with massive defense platforms and ion cannons.
Development and Legacy
The development of Conquest: Frontier Wars is a fascinating piece of PC gaming history. The game was originally conceived at Digital Anvil, the studio founded by legendary Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, alongside Eric “Wingman” Peterson and other industry veterans.
When Microsoft purchased Digital Anvil in 2000, they were primarily focused on their own Age of Empires franchise and wanted to aggressively cut features from Conquest to rush it out the door. Disagreeing with this direction, Eric Peterson and several core team members successfully negotiated the rights to the game, left Digital Anvil, and formed Fever Pitch Studios. This allowed them to finish the game exactly as they intended—keeping the complex Fleet Admirals and multi-map systems completely intact—and eventually released it via Ubi Soft.
Upon its release in August 2001, the game received very positive reviews for its innovative logistics and impressive scale. While it never achieved the massive mainstream fame of StarCraft or Homeworld, it remains a highly respected hidden gem among hardcore space RTS fans. In December 2013, to preserve the game’s legacy, the developers released the game’s original source code bundled with every digital copy purchased on GOG.com.
