Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault is the critically acclaimed 2014 single-player standalone expansion for Relic Entertainment’s Company of Heroes 2.

If The Western Front Armies was designed to fix and expand the competitive multiplayer sandbox, Ardennes Assault was explicitly designed to redeem the franchise’s single-player reputation. After the massive cultural and critical backlash surrounding the grim, heavily controversial Russian campaign of the base game, Relic pivoted hard. They returned the focus to the US Forces and delivered a highly replayable, strategically deep masterpiece centered entirely around one of the most famous conflicts of World War II: the Battle of the Bulge.

The Meta-Campaign and “Iron Man” Persistence

What makes Ardennes Assault so legendary is that it completely abandoned the traditional, linear sequence of missions used in previous Company of Heroes games.

Instead, the campaign utilizes a massive, dynamic strategic “meta-map” of the Ardennes region, split into distinct territories.

Key mechanical innovations of this campaign include:

  • Dynamic Enemy Movement: You get to choose which territory to attack next. However, the German AI is not static. If you defeat a German force in one sector, the surviving enemies will actually retreat to an adjacent territory on the map, physically reinforcing that region and making your next battle significantly harder.
  • Persistent Company Health: This is the most stressful, brilliant mechanic in the game. Your troops are not disposable. The overall “Health” and “Veterancy” of your companies persist seamlessly from one mission to the next. If you win a battle but suffer 80% casualties, your company will enter the next mission completely crippled.
  • Permanent Death: If you mismanage your resources, take too many casualties, and a company’s health drops to zero, that company is permanently wiped off the map. You can literally lose the entire campaign if all your companies are destroyed.
  • Requisition (Req) Points: By completing primary and dynamic secondary objectives on the map, you earn Requisition points. This acts as the campaign currency, allowing you to either reinforce your battered companies (restoring their health but lowering their average veterancy) or purchase massive upgrades on a 72-level skill tree.

The Companies

At the start of the campaign, you are placed in command of three distinct companies of the US Forces, each led by a specific commanding officer with unique global abilities and playstyles:

  • Able Company (Airborne): Master of hit-and-run tactics and clandestine operations. Led by Captain Jason Derby, this company relies heavily on dropping elite Paratroopers directly behind enemy lines, pathfinder scouting, and devastating P-47 Thunderbolt strafing runs.
  • Baker Company (Mechanized): The armored fist. Commanded by Captain Johnny Edwards, Baker Company specializes in heavy vehicle pushes. Their infantry can hitch rides on tanks, and they rely heavily on half-tracks and Shermans to rapidly overwhelm German defensive lines.
  • Dog Company (Support): The slow, methodical meat-grinder. Led by Captain Frank Conti, this company relies on heavy artillery, combat engineers, and overwhelming explosive ordinance to systematically level German fortifications before sending infantry forward.
  • (Note: Relic also released a fourth company, Fox Company (Rangers), led by Captain Monte Durante, which was available as a pre-order bonus or premium DLC, specializing in elite close-quarters combat).

Development and Legacy

Released in November 2014, Ardennes Assault was universally praised by critics and fans, often cited as one of the greatest real-time strategy single-player campaigns ever crafted.

By forcing players to actually care about the survival of their troops, Relic perfectly captured the desperate, grueling reality of the American forces trapped in the freezing Ardennes forest in the winter of 1944. The campaign’s replayability—driven by the randomized dynamic objectives, the changing enemy movements, and the deep skill trees—set a new gold standard for RTS single-player design. In fact, the dynamic map was so beloved that Relic heavily lifted the concept to use as the foundational basis for the massive Mediterranean campaign in Company of Heroes 3 nearly a decade later.

Key Features:

  • The Strategic Meta-Map — Command the war from a macro level, choosing where to strike next across a dynamic, non-linear map of the Belgian Ardennes.
  • Persistent Casualties — Experience incredibly high-stakes gameplay where every soldier lost directly damages your company’s permanent health for the rest of the campaign.
  • Three Asymmetrical Companies — Balance the deployment of the Airborne, Mechanized, and Support companies, utilizing their unique strengths to counter specific German threats.
  • Deep Customization — Spend Requisition points across a massive 72-node skill tree to upgrade specific abilities, from cheaper paratrooper drops to wider artillery barrages.
  • A Standalone Experience — A completely self-contained single-player package that requires no prior knowledge of the base Company of Heroes 2 game.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) — November 17, 2014
  • macOS & Linux — 2015
  • (Currently available digitally on Steam as a standalone purchase or as part of the complete Company of Heroes 2 franchise bundles).
