GOG has launched another 72-hour giveaway, and this time it’s State of Mind, the 2018 cyberpunk thriller from Daedalic Entertainment. Normally priced at $19.99, the game is free to claim and keep forever, DRM-free, until September 10, 2026 at 13:00 UTC.

As with every GOG giveaway, there’s no subscription and no catch. Once the game is in your library, it stays there, whether you install it now or in five years.

How to Claim It

  1. Log in to your GOG account, or create one for free at gog.com.
  2. Open the State of Mind store page or the GOG homepage and scroll to the giveaway banner.
  3. Click “Get it Free” or “Add to Library.”

The deadline is Thursday, September 10 at 13:00 UTC (9 AM ET / 6 AM PT / 3 PM CEST). If the banner doesn’t appear on the game page, check the GOG homepage instead, as the giveaway is sometimes only surfaced there.

What Is State of Mind?

Developer / Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment  |  Released: August 15, 2018  |  Engine: Unreal Engine 4  |  Regular price: $19.99

State of Mind is a third-person narrative adventure set in Berlin, 2048. Resources are running thin, the air and water are making people sick, and crime is climbing while war rumbles in the background. Governments and corporations sell technological progress as the fix: drones and humanoid robots handle public jobs, everything is networked, and surveillance never clocks out.

You play as Richard Nolan, a journalist and one of the few voices still loudly critical of that trade-off. After an explosion leaves him hospitalized, he wakes to discover his wife and son have vanished. What begins as a family search pulls him into a much larger conflict over what humanity should become, with a decaying physical world on one side and a frictionless digital utopia called City 5 on the other. The story splits its perspective between Richard and Adam Newman, a second protagonist living inside that virtual paradise, and gradually reveals how the two are connected.

The game deals directly with transhumanism, mind-uploading, and mass surveillance, and it doesn’t hand out easy answers. Creative lead Martin Ganteföhr, previously known for the 2004 adventure The Moment of Silence, built the whole project around the tension between a messy material world and a polished digital one. Gamereactor summed it up neatly: if you could play an Aldous Huxley novel, this would be it.

One detail worth knowing before you start: Richard Nolan is voiced by Doug Cockle, the actor behind Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher games. If you’ve spent hundreds of hours with Geralt’s gravel, you’ll recognize him within seconds.

How It Plays and How It Was Received

Mechanically, State of Mind is closer to a playable film than a traditional puzzle adventure. You explore environments, talk to characters, examine objects for clues, and work through light puzzles and mini-games as the story moves forward. The structure is strictly linear, and the game is upfront about prioritizing plot and character over open exploration or replayability. Besides Richard, you’ll briefly control five additional playable characters over the course of the story. HowLongToBeat puts the main story at around 9.5 hours, with completionists landing closer to 12.5.

Reception was mixed but respectful. It holds a 69 on Metacritic for PC, a 78% “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, and 3.8 out of 5 from GOG users. Critics praised the world-building, the striking low-poly visual style, and the soundtrack, while the most common complaints targeted the slow pacing, filler fetch sequences, and a protagonist several reviewers found hard to like. Hardcore Gamer called it a memorable story-driven experience that sacrifices replay value for a strong single playthrough, which is a fair summary of the whole package. Note that it’s rated ESRB Mature 17+ for violence, sexual themes, partial nudity, and drug use, and the install weighs in at around 23 GB.

If you’re the kind of player who enjoys games like Detroit: Become Human or Daedalic’s own point-and-click catalog, and you’re more interested in themes and atmosphere than mechanical depth, this is an easy pickup at $0. If you need tight gameplay to stay engaged, temper your expectations.

Also Free Right Now: Hayfever on Steam

Separately from the GOG giveaway, Hayfever, a 2020 precision platformer from the developer of Chenso Club, has been switched to free-to-play permanently on Steam. Previously priced at $15, it carries a 92% “Very Positive” rating. Unlike the GOG offer, this one has no deadline.
