Insomniac Games community director James Stevenson has denied that Marvel’s Wolverine used any generative AI assets, after a peculiar bathroom sign spotted in the game spread across social media and fueled speculation about the studio’s production pipeline.

The Sign That Started It All

Marvel’s Wolverine launched exclusively on PlayStation 5 earlier this week, and early player feedback has been mixed. Common criticisms have focused on a so-called “hand-holding” feel, with many users arguing that tasks resolve themselves with minimal player input. Against that backdrop, a screenshot showing Logan standing in front of a bathroom door began circulating online. The sign on the door contained several visual oddities, most notably what appeared to be two overlapping male figures on one side of the coed indicator, creating a distorted and nonsensical image. For many viewers, the malformed graphic looked exactly like the kind of artifact a generative AI image tool might produce.

Stevenson’s Response and the Community Pushback

According to Insider Gaming, Stevenson addressed the situation directly on X, writing: “No. This is a UV map bug and we have a fix coming. There are no AI generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine.” A UV map controls how a 2D texture wraps around a 3D object, and a misconfigured one can cause textures to repeat, mirror, or overlap in unintended ways.

The explanation did not fully satisfy the online audience. As IGN reported, several developers and artists replied with skepticism. One user shared a rough diagram suggesting the UV layout would have had to be intentionally arranged to produce that result on a flat sign surface. Another offered to supply Insomniac with a corrected sign image, joking that the task took only ten minutes. A third commenter noted that blaming AI might have actually been a more convincing excuse given the nature of the distortion.

Where Things Stand

Insomniac has already released one hotfix since launch to address separate visual issues, including adjustments to the scent trail feature that drew complaints from players. A fix for the UV map bug on the bathroom sign is reportedly also in progress. The studio has not elaborated further on how the error made it into the shipped build.

The episode lands at a sensitive moment for the games industry, where scrutiny over AI use in development has intensified. Studios across the sector have faced pressure to disclose whether generative tools contributed to any shipped content, and player communities have grown increasingly attentive to visual anomalies that might indicate AI involvement. Stevenson’s denial is unambiguous, but the ongoing debate in the replies suggests that for some players, the UV map explanation raises as many questions as it answers.
