Dragon Quest Hits 100 Million Sales on Its 40th Anniversary

Square Enix has confirmed that the Dragon Quest franchise has surpassed 100 million copies sold worldwide, with the milestone landing during the series’ 40th anniversary year. The publisher marked the occasion with a commemorative video featuring series creator Yuji Horii, who first brought the franchise to Japanese players back in 1986.

Four Decades, One Hundred Million Copies

According to Gamekult, Dragon Quest’s catalog now spans 11 mainline entries alongside dozens of spin-offs, remakes, and remasters. The franchise joins an exclusive group of gaming series that have each cleared the 100 million sales threshold, including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, and Monster Hunter. Horii, now 72, has shepherded the property through every one of those decades.

A significant driver of recent sales activity has been Square Enix’s push to modernize older titles using the HD-2D visual style. The first three Dragon Quest games received HD-2D remakes across the past two years, bringing the classic RPGs to contemporary audiences with updated presentation while preserving their original structure. Dragon Quest VII also received a reimagining under a different visual approach, signaling the publisher’s broader intent to resurface its back catalog.

What Is Coming Next for the Franchise

The series shows no signs of slowing its output. As Gamekult reports, Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon Classic HD recently gave players a chance to revisit that well-regarded spin-off. Looking ahead, Dragon Quest XI S arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, giving the expanded edition of the eleventh mainline game a home on Nintendo’s latest hardware.

The Monsters sub-series also has a new entry on the way. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is scheduled for December 3 across a wide range of platforms.

Dragon Quest XII Still in Development

Beyond the remakes and spin-offs, Square Enix continues work on Dragon Quest XII, the next canonical chapter in the mainline series. Gamekult notes the project has faced notable turbulence during development, though no further details have been disclosed by the publisher. With a century of millions already sold and a pipeline that stretches well into the near future, the franchise appears as active heading into its fifth decade as it has ever been.
