Compulsion Games Completes Buyout, Owns South of Midnight IP Again
Compulsion Games has finalized its management buyout from Microsoft, reclaiming full ownership of its intellectual property and cutting the tech giant out of future revenue on its titles. CEO Guillaume Provost confirmed to GamesBeat that the deal is done and that Microsoft has transferred the IP for the studio’s games back to Compulsion, according to PC Gamer.
What the Buyout Covers
Provost stated that the management team has acquired both the studio and its staff, in addition to the IP portfolio. That library includes the studio’s most recent release, South of Midnight, as well as We Happy Few and the 2013 title Contrast. As GameSpot notes, Compulsion is now officially an ex-Xbox studio, having spent several years under the Xbox Game Studios banner before this separation.
The practical effect for consumers is straightforward: if you buy South of Midnight anywhere other than the Xbox digital storefront, Compulsion now keeps a larger portion of that revenue and Microsoft receives nothing. For players who have been waiting to support the studio directly, the timing is significant.
A Turbulent Road to Independence
The buyout did not happen in calm waters. Earlier this year, rumors of outright studio closure circulated after Microsoft carried out another round of heavy layoffs across its gaming division. Compulsion then announced it would be leaving Microsoft rather than shutting down, and began pursuing independent partnerships. The uncertainty had already pushed some Compulsion developers to look for work elsewhere before any official announcement was made.
Pulling off a clean separation from a publisher as large as Microsoft is a difficult task under any circumstances, and the fact that the studio has retained its staff and IP makes this outcome a notably positive one for the team. South of Midnight earned strong critical reception, with PC Gamer awarding it 83% and praising its Deep South setting, folklore-heavy storytelling, and themes of Black liberation.
What Comes Next
Compulsion has not announced a specific publishing partner to replace Microsoft, and details about upcoming projects remain sparse. What is clear is that the studio now controls its own creative and commercial future, a position that gives it far more flexibility than it had as part of one of gaming’s largest corporate structures.
For anyone still on the fence about South of Midnight, the studio’s independence adds a new reason to take the plunge. The game is available now, and purchases outside the Xbox storefront go directly toward supporting a team that fought to remain intact and in control of its own work.
