Amazon Games has officially cancelled its long-gestating The Lord of the Rings MMO, bringing an end to one of the most turbulent projects in recent gaming history.

The cancellation, first reported by Eurogamer and confirmed across multiple outlets on May 14–15, 2026, comes after significant layoffs at Amazon Games in late 2025. Sources familiar with the project say development had been struggling for months, with the game never moving far beyond early pre-production.

In a statement to Eurogamer, Amazon Games head Jeff Grattis said:

“Our creative team continues to explore a compelling new game experience that does justice to Tolkien’s world; we are working closely with Middle-earth and remain excited about the IP.”

This marks at least the second (and possibly third) time Amazon has pulled the plug on a Lord of the Rings MMO. The project was originally announced in 2019 in partnership with Leyou Technologies, cancelled in 2021 after Tencent acquired Leyou, revived in 2023 with Embracer Group, and has now been shelved once more.

What Went Wrong?

  • The game was being developed by Amazon Games Orange County (the team behind New World).
  • Over 1,000 developers reportedly shifted from New World to the LOTR MMO shortly before the major 2025 layoffs.
  • Amazon appears to be stepping back from large-scale MMO development in general, shifting focus toward smaller, casual, and AI-driven experiences.

What’s Next for Amazon and Middle-earth?

While the MMO is dead, Amazon insists it is not abandoning The Lord of the Rings license entirely. No details have been shared about the new “compelling game experience,” including genre, platforms, or timeline.

Fans are reacting with a mix of disappointment and resignation, with many pointing to the long-running The Lord of the Rings Online (launched in 2007) as the MMO that still delivers the Tolkien experience they want.

This cancellation is the latest in a string of high-profile setbacks for Amazon Games, following the decision to put New World into maintenance mode.
