Where to buy
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is a massive open-world action role-playing game developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo. Originally released as a groundbreaking Wii U exclusive in 2015, this meticulously remastered and expanded edition launched on the Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2025, followed by an enhanced release for the Nintendo Switch 2 in February 2026. Far more than just a visual upgrade, the Definitive Edition overhauls UI, removes tedious progression barriers, and adds substantial brand-new story content, making it the ultimate way to experience one of the most ambitious sci-fi RPGs ever created.
Core Story
The year is 2054. Following a catastrophic intergalactic war between two highly advanced alien races near Earth, humanity is forced to evacuate the planet on massive colony ships. You play as a highly customizable avatar (canonically referred to as “Cross”) who awakens from stasis pods on the alien world of Mira after your colony ship, the White Whale, crash-lands. Rescued by the veteran soldier Elma, you join BLADE—a military and exploration organization tasked with protecting the survivors in the makeshift city of New Los Angeles (NLA). As you explore the treacherous, stunningly beautiful continents of Mira, you must locate missing stasis pods, fight off the hostile alien coalition known as the Ganglion, and uncover the deep, mysterious nature of the planet itself. The Definitive Edition notably adds an entirely new epilogue chapter and new playable characters to expand the lore beyond the original game’s cliffhanger.
Gameplay and Features
Xenoblade Chronicles X is famous for its unbelievable sense of scale, blending deep RPG combat with unmatched open-world exploration:
- Seamless World of Mira: The planet is divided into five massive, incredibly distinct continents (like the lush Primordia or the glowing spores of Noctilum) that can be explored entirely without loading screens.
- Skells: The ultimate power fantasy. Midway through the game, players earn a “Skell”—a massive, customizable, transforming mech. Skells allow you to fly across the continents, reach hidden areas, and fight towering, Godzilla-sized monsters (Tyrants).
- Deep Combat System: Combat revolves around auto-attacks, managing cooldowns on “Arts” (special moves), and a highly complex “Overdrive” system that allows you to chain attacks together for infinite combos and massive damage.
- Definitive Edition Additions: Monolith Soft added massive new features, including a brand new Skell (the transforming Hraesvelg), new playable characters (like the test pilot Liesel), and new story content.
- Massive QoL Overhaul: The remaster completely removed the tedious “BLADE Level” grind needed for exploration in the original. It also finally allows players to swap out their 20+ party members directly from the menu (instead of having to physically find them in NLA) and grants shared EXP to characters not currently in the active party.
PC Version
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is a first-party Nintendo title and has never received an official PC port. However, due to the massive scale of the game, it has a legendary status in the PC emulation community. While the original 2015 version runs flawlessly on high-end PCs via the Wii U emulator (Cemu) with 4K texture packs and 60 FPS mods, the Definitive Edition and its new story content can currently only be experienced natively on Nintendo hardware (or via Switch emulators for players legally backing up their own copies).
Console Versions
The Nintendo Switch version (2025) beautifully revitalizes the original game, featuring vastly improved character models, sharper UI, and significantly faster load times compared to the Wii U original. The game was also a showcase title for the Nintendo Switch 2 (2026), receiving an enhanced native version that pushes the open-world visuals even further with 4K output capabilities, improved draw distances, and a buttery-smooth 60 frames per second, allowing players to fly their Skells across Mira with unprecedented visual fidelity.
Quick Note
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is an absolute masterpiece of open-world design and sci-fi world-building. It is dense, systems-heavy, and incredibly rewarding.
In short: If you want to get lost for 150+ hours surveying an alien planet, hunting giant dinosaurs, and flying around in a heavily armed transforming mech, there is simply nothing else quite like this game on the market.
