The Surge 2 is a 2019 action RPG developed by Deck13 Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, released September 24, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It holds Metacritic scores in the low-to-mid 70s — close to the original on aggregate, but with a critical consensus that it improved on its predecessor in nearly every system, a gap the r/patientgamers long tail (“so I finally played The Surge 2…”) has treated kindly ever since.

The limb-targeting loot economy returns intact — cut the gear you covet off the enemy wearing it — now inside Jericho City, a full quarantined urban sprawl replacing the first game’s single industrial complex.

Jericho City

Surviving a plane crash into quarantined Jericho City, a created-character protagonist (the sequel drops Warren for full character creation) wakes to nanite storms, warring factions, and a mysterious connection to a girl named Athena at the heart of the outbreak — continuing the first game’s Utopia thread on a city-wide canvas of parks, slums, and corporate towers dense with Deck13’s trademark loop-back shortcuts.

What Improved

The headline addition is a directional parry system — blocking toward the incoming swing for devastating openings — layered onto faster combat, a drone companion, far greater enemy and build variety, and the same sever-what-you-want loot logic sharpened. Reviews credited exactly that list while repeating two reservations: technical roughness on base consoles and mid-tier production sheen against the genre’s giants. Commercially it underperformed, and Deck13 moved on to Atlas Fallen — leaving The Surge 2 as the series’ finale for now, and its limb economy still without an imitator.

Where to Play It Today

The Surge 2 is on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, almost permanently discounted into single digits, with The Kraken DLC bundled cheaply — the community’s standing recommendation for anyone who bounced off the first game’s pacing but liked its ideas.
