The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is an upcoming story-driven, third-person science-fiction action role-playing video game developed and published by Owlcat Games (highly celebrated for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and the Pathfinder series) in official partnership with Alcon Interactive Group.

Officially revealed during the summer showcase cycle in June 2025, the title expands the gritty, sociopolitical universe of the sci-fi franchise created by James S.A. Corey (Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck).

The game has garnered immense attention from the strategy and RPG communities for its explicit shift away from Owlcat’s traditional isometric, turn-based cRPG comfort zone. Instead, Osiris Reborn is a cinematic, real-time tactical action RPG that gaming critics and the developers themselves openly describe as a spiritual love letter to BioWare’s classic Mass Effect trilogy, transposed into the hard sci-fi reality of The Expanse.

The Core Premise: Wrong Place, Wrong Time

Set within the established timeline of the books and television series, Osiris Reborn intentionally sidesteps the grand heroic narratives of the Rocinante crew. Players are not out to save the solar system; they are just trying to get paid and survive the meat grinder of interplanetary politics.

The campaign kicks off with a highly detailed character creator, allowing players to build and customize their own captain, selecting their background origin as a privileged Earther, a militarily disciplined Martian, or a fiercely independent Belter.

You step into the magnetic boots of a mercenary squad commander working for Pinkwater Security. What is supposed to be a routine, low-stakes shore leave on the asteroid Eros Station violently spirals out of control.

The station is abruptly plunged into a brutal, iron-clad quarantine lockdown. Trapped behind the sealed bulkheads and drawn into a terrifying system-wide conspiracy, you must escape, take command of a highly advanced space frigate, and gather a crew of desperate specialists to keep your ship flying while every major faction in the system tries to hunt you down.

“Mass Effect” Style Design Pillars

Owlcat has systematically re-engineered their gameplay systems to deliver a cinematic, character-driven space opera:

Tactical Cover-Based Gunplay

Combat is resolved via real-time, third-person mechanical loops. Players utilize dynamic environmental cover, fire an array of kinetic and specialized ballistic weaponry, and execute high-impact tactical abilities.

You march into combat with a three-man squad: your captain and two active field companions. While you control your captain directly, you issue real-time strategic instructions to your active squad mates.

Furthermore, characters left behind on your frigate provide remote baseline grid support—such as hacking security doors, disabling enemy automated turrets, or broadcasting electromagnetic shields right when an encounter goes sideways.

Companion Scars and Romance

True to BioWare tradition, your crew mates are deeply complex individuals harboring their own traumatic secrets, hidden agendas, and factions loyalties. Spending time between missions walking the decks of your frigate opens up deep personal dialogue trees.

Your choices, leadership style, and political alignments will cause your relationships to dramatically flourish or permanently deteriorate. Owlcat has officially confirmed that full squad romance paths are highly integrated into the narrative structure, alongside a returning cast of familiar faces and voices from the television series reprising their original roles.

Exploring the Fragile System

The game features a dense map of iconic cosmic locations, including the teeming, claustrophobic slums of Ceres Station, the sprawling dome gardens of Ganymede, and the imperious political strongholds of Mars and Luna.

Every port of call shifts the perspective layout: a conversation option that works smoothly with a corrupt Belter dock worker on Ceres will get you immediately thrown into a military brig by a Martian Marine officer, forcing players to master spatial diplomacy to extract secrets and secure high-value black market smuggling contracts.

Current Status and the 2027 Horizon

As of May 2026, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is navigating a highly successful Closed Beta phase. Access is currently restricted to crowd-funding backers and “Founders” who purchased premium digital tier packages (such as the Miller’s Pack).

Initial feedback from the live playtests has been exceptionally positive, with players heavily praising the game’s atmospheric Unreal Engine 5 environmental lighting, authentic hard-sci-fi gravity mechanics, and mature, uncompromising writing style.

The development team is actively using 2026 to parse community tracking telemetry, tighten up third-person shooting hitboxes, and expand the branching logic of the companion loyalty matrices. With a target release window firmly pinned for Q2 2027, the title currently stands as one of the most highly anticipated sci-fi RPG prospects on the global gaming horizon.
