Stronghold Kingdoms (2012) is Firefly Studios’ grand experiment in turning the insular world of medieval castle-building into a massive, persistent MMORTS. Instead of fighting cartoonish AI lords like the Rat or the Wolf, you are dropped onto real-world geographical maps (like Great Britain, Europe, or North America) alongside thousands of other players. It successfully translates the franchise’s signature resource loops into a long-term, politically charged soap opera where a single war can stretch out over real-world months.
The Feudal Hierarchy and Political Mind Games
You don’t exist in a vacuum; you are a single cog in a massive, living medieval society.
- Parishes and Capitals: Every village belongs to a local Parish. Players within that region can vote for a Parish Steward, who controls the local parish capital, manages its shared defenses, and invests public taxes into upgrades that benefit the community—or just their own inner circle.
- Houses and Factions: As you rise through the ranks (from a humble Bumpkin to a mighty Prince), you can join Factions and Houses. This unlocks massive, theater-wide alliance warfare where hundreds of players coordinate simultaneous strikes to conquer entire countries.
The Multi-Year Tech Tree
Unlike traditional RTS games where you research an entire technology tree in 20 minutes, Kingdoms features a massive, branching tree that takes real-world time to master.
- Specialization Paths: You have to choose your role in the realm. Will you focus on Farming to unlock exotic foods and host opulent banquets for Honour? Will you specialize in Engineering to build complex, multi-layered stone walls? Or will you invest heavily in Theology and Arts to dominate the geopolitical landscape through soft influence?
The Wild Card: Strategy Cards
The most distinct shift from the mainline entries is the implementation of Strategy Cards, a mechanic that serves as the backbone of the game’s economic and military pacing.
- Tactical Boosts: These collectible cards can be played to grant instantaneous advantages. Stuck in a brutal siege? Play a card to instantly reinforce your gatehouse or spawn an emergency wave of archers.
- Economic Injections: If your iron production is flagging, a well-timed card can double your mining output for a few days, allowing you to flood the global marketplace with cheap resources to crash a rival’s economy.
Summary
Stronghold Kingdoms is a game of patience, diplomacy, and overnight paranoia. It strips away the immediate micro-intensive action of the standalone games and replaces it with a slow-burn grand strategy layout. It’s a world where you can log off for the night as a peaceful apple farmer and wake up the next morning to find that a rival House from across the continent has completely flattened your castle while you slept.
