SEGA Corporation
Stranger Than Heaven is an upcoming action-adventure from RGG Studio — the Sega team behind the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series — releasing January 15, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, day one on Xbox Game Pass. First teased at The Game Awards 2024 under the codename Project Century and formally unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2025, it’s the studio’s biggest new-IP swing since Judgment: a distant prequel to the Like a Dragon universe following Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American outcast building a life in Japan — across a story spanning roughly fifty years, with wartime 1943 at its dark center.
Preorders opened in June 2026 at $69.99 (Deluxe $89.99, Collector’s $129.99), and the January date does what most of 2026’s calendar did: steps deliberately clear of GTA VI’s November launch.

Fifty Years, Two Hands
The combat redesign is RGG’s most fundamental since the series began: instead of face-button combos, Makoto’s left and right sides are controlled independently via bumpers and triggers — jab with one hand while blocking with the other, chain asymmetric blows, wrestle enemies to the ground — with knives, hammers, and katanas layered in. Alongside it runs the Showman system: Makoto’s hidden musical talent grows into a performer’s career, with rumor-gathering feeding shows in a jazz-age entertainment world — the studio’s minigame obsession elevated into a second progression spine. Hands-on coverage through mid-2026 (a 30-minute Xbox Presents deep dive included) has been strikingly warm, with previewers calling the era-hopping structure and tone RGG’s most ambitious since Yakuza 0.
The Tupac Factor
The June 2026 date announcement carried the headline nobody predicted: Tupac Shakur appears in the game, recreated in CG — explicitly without AI, RGG stressed — in close collaboration with Amaru Entertainment, built from archival footage and photographs, alongside a cast mixing Hollywood names with series-familiar Japanese talent (Takashi Ukaji, Takaya Kuroda). It’s a marketing coup and a tonal statement in one: this is RGG aiming its crime-and-showbusiness storytelling at a global stage.
Where Things Stand
Stranger Than Heaven is preorderable now on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox (preorder bonus: the Dosu “Kagekiri” weapon), with day-one Game Pass confirmed. Between the combat rework, the half-century structure, and the studio’s streak, it enters 2027 as one of the year’s most-watched releases — we’ll revise this entry at launch.
