Robinson’s Requiem is a 1994 first-person survival simulation/adventure game developed and published by the French studio Silmarils. Originally released exclusively in Europe for Atari ST, Amiga, MS-DOS/PC, and Macintosh, it later received ports to 3DO and Atari Jaguar CD. It is widely regarded as one of the earliest and most uncompromising survival simulators, blending realistic health management, exploration, and resource scavenging in a hostile alien environment. In 2026, the game (along with its sequel Deus) is available as the Robinson’s Requiem Collection on GOG.com, making it the easiest legal way to play on modern PCs.

Core Story

In the 22nd century, humanity sends elite explorers known as Robinsons to scout distant planets for colonization. You play as Officer Trepliev1, a veteran Robinson on what should be his final mission. Your spacecraft is sabotaged, and you are deliberately crash-landed on the uncharted prison planet Zarathustra—a deadly world filled with extreme climates, dangerous wildlife, toxic plants, and unknown diseases. Branded a threat for discovering too much about the corrupt Alien World Exploration (AWE) program, you must survive alone, treat your own injuries, craft tools, and find a way to escape or signal for rescue. The story is sparse and atmospheric, delivered through in-game logs and environmental storytelling, emphasizing isolation, consequence, and human endurance.

Gameplay and Features

Robinson’s Requiem is a punishing, realistic survival experience with a steep learning curve:

  • Detailed Health Simulation: Monitor and manage dozens of vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, infections, fractures, poisoning, etc.). You can perform self-surgery, amputate limbs, or treat wounds with improvised tools.
  • First-Person Exploration: Freely roam a large, open alien world with varied biomes (jungle, desert, arctic, underground caves). Forage for food/water, craft makeshift weapons and tools, and avoid or fight hostile creatures.
  • Consequence-Driven Survival: Every action has realistic outcomes—eat the wrong plant and suffer food poisoning; ignore an injury and die from infection. The game features one of the most detailed “many ways to die” systems of its era.
  • Atmosphere: Immersive 3D environments (impressive for 1994), dynamic weather, and a focus on tension and realism rather than arcade action.

It is strictly single-player with no multiplayer or co-op. The campaign is challenging and non-linear, lasting roughly 8–15+ hours depending on how thoroughly you explore and survive. Critics at the time noted its innovative depth but criticized the steep difficulty, dated graphics, and high system requirements.

PC Version (1994 / GOG Collection in 2026)

The PC (MS-DOS) version is the most complete and widely played today. It is available as part of the Robinson’s Requiem Collection on GOG.com, which includes the original game plus its sequel Deus with modern installers, compatibility fixes, and optional widescreen patches. The game runs smoothly on any modern Windows PC via DOSBox or the GOG wrapper and supports keyboard/mouse controls. No official remaster exists, but the collection makes it fully playable without manual emulation tweaks.

Other Platforms

  • Amiga, Atari ST/Falcon, Macintosh (1994): Original releases with minor differences in graphics and performance.
  • 3DO and Atari Jaguar CD (1995–1996): Later console ports with improved visuals and CD audio in some versions, but rarer and harder to play today.

No official Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation, or Xbox versions (modern or otherwise) exist as of April 2026.

Quick Note

Robinson’s Requiem is a pioneering, brutally realistic survival sim that feels ahead of its time—think a 1994 precursor to games like The Long Dark or Subnautica, but far more unforgiving and simulation-heavy. It rewards patience, observation, and careful resource management but can be extremely punishing for newcomers. If you enjoy hardcore survival adventures and don’t mind retro graphics and a steep learning curve, the GOG Collection is the perfect (and only modern) way to experience this obscure classic and its sequel.

In short, it’s a sci-fi Robinson Crusoe tale where you crash-land on a deadly planet and must survive using only your wits and medical knowledge: “Exiled to Zarathustra… survive or die trying.” Grab the Collection on GOG for an easy, legal way to play on PC today.
