Ready or Not is a 2023 tactical first-person shooter developed and published by VOID Interactive. Widely celebrated as the true spiritual successor to Sierra Entertainment’s legendary 2005 classic, SWAT 4, the game completely rejects the fast-paced, run-and-gun mechanics of modern arcade shooters. Instead, it delivers a slow, grueling, and highly realistic simulation of modern police SWAT operations.
Set in the fictional, deeply corrupt, and crime-ridden city of Los Sueños, California (a dark analog for Los Angeles), players take on the role of David “Judge” Beaumont, the commander of the Los Sueños Police Department (LSPD) SWAT team. As the city fractures under the weight of severe wealth inequality, political corruption, and extreme gang violence, Judge and his squad are called in to defuse the city’s most volatile crises. Missions range from high-risk warrant serving and hostage rescues to deeply disturbing scenarios involving active shooters, bomb threats, and human trafficking rings.
Gameplay
Ready or Not is defined by its incredibly punishing difficulty and its strict adherence to police protocol. Violence is meant to be a last resort, and situational awareness is the key to survival.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Rules of Engagement (ROE): Unlike military shooters where you shoot everything that moves, Ready or Not penalizes players for unauthorized use of deadly force. Players must shout for compliance, attempt to arrest suspects, and only use lethal force if a suspect raises a weapon or directly threatens a hostage or officer.
- Less-Lethal Arsenal: To adhere to the ROE and secure a high mission score, players are equipped with an array of less-lethal pacification tools. This includes beanbag shotguns, pepperball rifles, tasers, CS gas (tear gas), and flashbangs to disorient and arrest suspects without killing them.
- Tactical Command: In single-player, you command a four-man AI squad (split into Red and Blue elements). Players use a robust command interface to order the team to stack up on doors, slide optic wands under doorframes to check for traps and targets, pick locks, deploy explosives, and execute complex “breach and clear” maneuvers.
- Commander Mode: The 1.0 release introduced a full single-player campaign mode with management elements. Players must manage the psychological stress of their AI officers. If an officer witnesses too much civilian death or is forced into highly lethal shootouts, they can develop PTSD, requiring players to cycle them out of the active roster and send them to therapy. If an officer dies in a mission, they suffer permadeath and are lost permanently.
- Tense Co-op: The game features a highly popular, seamless 5-player cooperative mode, where communication, covering sightlines, and moving methodically as a unit are absolutely mandatory to survive.
Development and Legacy
Development of Ready or Not began around 2016, born from VOID Interactive’s desire to fill the massive void left by the abandonment of the tactical police simulator genre. After a highly successful stint in Steam Early Access starting in late 2021, the game officially launched its massive 1.0 update in December 2023.
The game is notable for its uncompromising, deeply unsettling tone. The developers were committed to portraying the grim reality of SWAT operations without sugarcoating the subject matter. This dedication to realism actually led to a high-profile split between VOID Interactive and their original publisher, Team17, in 2021, reportedly due to the developer’s refusal to compromise on including a highly controversial (and terrifyingly realistic) active shooter mission set in a college campus.
Upon its full release, Ready or Not was met with widespread critical acclaim. Reviewers praised its incredible sound design, meticulous weapon handling, advanced AI, and the sheer, palpable tension of clearing a dark, unpredictable building room by room. It has firmly established itself as the premier tactical shooter on the market for players seeking a hardcore, methodical, and grounded cooperative experience.
