No Rest for the Wicked is an action RPG developed by Moon Studios — the team behind the Ori games — which entered Steam Early Access on April 18, 2024 and leaves it with a full 1.0 release in October 2026, launching simultaneously on PC and PlayStation 5, with Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 versions confirmed for later. Announced at a June 2026 State of Play, the 1.0 build promises over 60 hours of content and a dramatically expanded game; Early Access copies upgrade automatically.

Its two-year Early Access arc is the story so far: a Mixed-rated, performance-plagued 2024 launch (OpenCritic 73, 47% recommend), a publisher-change legal tangle mid-stream, three major rebuilding updates — and a Steam rating that climbed to 87% positive across 24,000+ reviews with 1.8 million copies sold before 1.0 even landed. It’s the Ori playbook — difficult beginning, relentless iteration, earned redemption — at ARPG scale.

Isola Sacra and the Cerim

Set in 1476 of its own calendar, the game casts you as a Cerim — a holy warrior of a dwindling order — shipwrecked onto Isola Sacra to contain the Pestilence, a plague reshaping flesh across an island already tearing itself apart between a newly crowned king and an inquisitorial church. The hub city of Sacrament grows with the player: houses to own, vendors to restore, bounties and weekly challenge content layered onto the campaign. Visually it’s unmistakable — the Ori team’s hand-painted style turned oil-dark and brutal, consistently cited as among the most striking art direction in the genre.

Precision ARPG, Not Diablo

Despite the isometric camera, this is closer to a Souls game than a loot-clicker: deliberate stamina combat, weighty dodges and parries, brutal bosses, environmental traversal with climbing and platforming, plus survival-adjacent systems — cooking, crafting, resource runs — feeding the city-building loop. The Early Access era’s controversies tracked exactly those systems: durability, loot balance, and performance drew real anger (The Breach update initially made some of it worse before hotfixes), and Moon Studios’ willingness to keep re-cutting core systems in public became the game’s defining development trait — praised and exhausting in equal measure, as the long-running community threads attest.

The Road to 1.0

The January 2026 Together update delivered the most-requested feature — online co-op — and the June 2026 State of Play confirmation reframed the whole project: 1.0 arrives as effectively a relaunch, with new regions, bosses, story chapters, and the accumulated rebuilds of two years folded in. For newcomers, the standing community advice has flipped from “wait” to “wait for October” — the version landing at 1.0 is the game Moon Studios was always pitching.

Where Things Stand

No Rest for the Wicked is available now in Early Access on Steam, with the 1.0 release arriving October 2026 on PC and PS5 (Early Access purchases upgrade free). Xbox Series and Switch 2 versions are confirmed without dates. We’ll revise this entry at 1.0 — on current trajectory, from cautionary tale to comeback story.
