INSPIRE
Where to buy
INSPIRE is a 2024 indie action-RPG and top-down twin-stick shooter developed by solo developer Nick Housmans and published by Husman Games. Released on April 12, 2024, for PC via Steam, the game is an ambitious, stylized sci-fi adventure that blends fast-paced arcade shooting with open-world exploration and jetpack traversal.
Core Concept and Story
The game takes place in the near future of 2042. You play as a B.E.C. (Bionically Enhanced Collector), an operative employed by Earth’s leading global employment agency, Collector Corp.
Initially tasked with routine collections, your life—and the fate of the entire planet—is abruptly thrown into chaos with the sudden arrival of the Sentians, a mysterious and highly aggressive extraterrestrial race. Plunged into the middle of an all-out alien invasion, you must transform from a corporate collector into the unexpected hero Earth desperately needs, fighting to take back the planet’s territories.
Gameplay and Features
INSPIRE attempts to blend the loot-and-shoot mechanics of an ARPG with the fast-paced mobility of a twin-stick shooter:
- The Transformable Backpack: This is the game’s central mechanic. You are accompanied by a high-tech, dynamic backpack companion that can transform in multiple ways—most notably into a Jetpack. This gives the top-down combat a lot of verticality, allowing you to soar over environments, dodge enemy attacks, and quickly traverse the map.
- Customizable Arsenal and Bionics: Players can tailor their playstyle by engaging enemies in close-quarters bionic combat using their enhanced abilities, or by picking off aliens from a distance with a wide variety of customizable firearms.
- Semi-Open World Exploration: The game moves away from purely linear levels, offering a stylized, semi-open world to explore. Players can fast-travel and jetpack across diverse biomes, ranging from lush forests and icy mountains to dark craters.
- Dynamic World Events: The game boasts a dynamic day/night cycle and seasonal system that alters the environment. Furthermore, an underlying “Battle System” tracks the player’s actions, triggering dynamic events as you push back the alien threat.
- The Soundtrack: One of the most universally praised aspects of the game is its driving, epic electronic soundtrack, composed entirely by the developer himself (under the artist name Husman).
Reception and State of the Game
As an indie title created by a single developer, INSPIRE is generally viewed as an incredibly impressive technical achievement with a lot of raw potential. Currently sitting at a “Positive” rating on Steam, players highly praise the fluid jetpack movement, the vibrant art style, and the fantastic music.
However, many players and reviewers have noted that despite its official release, the game still feels like it is in an “Early Access” or Alpha state. Common criticisms include a lack of polish regarding the game’s UI, confusing leveling and progression mechanics, missing quality-of-life features (like a mini-map or clear objective markers), and various bugs. Despite the jank, the developer’s passion for the project has earned it a lot of goodwill from its small community.
Quick Note
INSPIRE is a passion-fueled, solo-developed sci-fi shooter that swings for the fences with its mobility and open-world design.
In short: While it suffers from the typical bugs, balance issues, and lack of polish expected from a one-man studio, its fun jetpack mechanics, stylish aesthetic, and thumping electronic soundtrack make it a charming, fast-paced indie adventure.
