Where to buy
Industria is a 2021 narrative-driven first-person shooter developed by the independent studio Bleakmill and published by Headup Games. Heavily inspired by classic story-driven shooters of the early 2000s, most notably Half-Life 2, the game blends alternate-history sci-fi with surreal, Lynchian horror elements. Set against the historical backdrop of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the game plunges players into a mysterious, brutalist parallel dimension ruled by a rogue artificial intelligence.
The story begins in East Berlin on the evening of November 9, 1989—the exact night the Berlin Wall is opened. The protagonist, Nora, discovers that her colleague and lover, Walter, has vanished after leaving a frantic voice message. Her search leads her deep into a clandestine research facility, where she is unexpectedly transported to the parallel dimension of Hakavik. She arrives in a haunting, deserted city characterized by towering brutalist architecture and overrun by hostile, steampunk-esque robotic constructs. Guided by a mysterious man via radio, Nora must uncover the secrets of the ATLAS artificial intelligence, survive the robotic onslaught, and find Walter in a reality where time flows differently.
Gameplay
Industria is designed as a classic, linear first-person shooter that prioritizes atmosphere, narrative pacing, and environmental exploration over constant, high-octane combat. The experience is relatively concise, intended to be completed in roughly four to five hours.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Classic FPS Combat: Nora starts with a simple pickaxe for melee combat before gradually acquiring a small, focused arsenal of firearms, including a pistol, a submachine gun, a shotgun, and a sniper rifle. Combat encounters are methodical, requiring players to aim carefully and utilize cover.
- Resource Management: Ammunition and health restoratives are scarce. Players must scavenge through abandoned offices, factories, and apartments to find supplies, adding a layer of tension and mild survival-horror elements to the progression.
- Physics and Puzzles: Wearing its Half-Life 2 inspirations on its sleeve, the game features physics-based interactions and light environmental puzzle-solving, requiring players to move crates, find keys, or activate machinery to progress through the linear levels.
- Atmospheric Exploration: The game relies heavily on environmental storytelling. Players piece together the history of Hakavik and the rise of ATLAS by reading scattered notes, listening to audio logs, and observing the surreal, decaying world around them.
Development and Legacy
Industria was the debut title for Bleakmill, originally founded as a two-person development team based in Berlin and Glasgow, before expanding slightly during production. The project began as a passionate homage to the atmospheric, narrative-focused shooters of the developers’ youth, specifically citing Valve’s Half-Life 2 and Portal series, as well as the surreal cinematic works of David Lynch, as primary influences.
Developing a 3D first-person shooter with a tiny indie team was a monumental undertaking. The developers utilized Unreal Engine 4 to craft the game’s striking visual identity, contrasting the familiar, grounded aesthetic of 1980s East Berlin with the bizarre, monolithic architecture of Hakavik. The haunting atmosphere was further elevated by an original, synthesizer-heavy soundtrack composed by Lukas Steinmeyer.
Upon its release in late 2021 for PC, and subsequently in 2022 for current-generation consoles, Industria received mixed to positive reviews. Critics heavily praised the game’s ambitious world-building, exceptional sound design, and oppressive atmosphere. However, as an indie title tackling a genre typically reserved for massive AAA studios, it also faced criticism for occasionally clunky combat mechanics, technical bugs at launch, and an abrupt ending. Despite its flaws, it succeeded in establishing Bleakmill as a talented studio capable of punching above its weight, paving the way for its visually stunning Unreal Engine 5 sequel, INDUSTRIA 2.
