Eternal Evil is a first-person survival horror game developed by Honor Games (and later co-published on consoles by Axyos Games). Originally launching on PC in late 2022 before making the jump to current-generation consoles in May 2025, the game serves as an unapologetic, blood-drenched love letter to the golden age of 1990s survival horror, heavily channeling the DNA of the classic Resident Evil franchise.

The narrative drops players into a small, decaying town that has just been struck by a mysterious apocalyptic event. Its citizens are rapidly mutating into bloodthirsty, vampiric ghouls and butchering the remaining human survivors. Playing from a first-person perspective, you must navigate the blood-soaked streets, apartments, and underground facilities to uncover the grim truth behind the outbreak and find a way to stop it before you become the next meal.

Gameplay

Eternal Evil strips away modern hand-holding, firmly rooting its mechanics in classic, old-school survival horror design. It balances desperate exploration and puzzle-solving with intense, tactical gunplay.

Key gameplay mechanics include:

• Evolving Enemies: The most distinct feature of the game is its dynamic enemy system. The vampiric ghouls roaming the town mutate and adapt as the game progresses. If you fail to eliminate them efficiently, they grow stronger, faster, and much more lethal.
• Physics-Based Gore: Combat relies on realistic shooting mechanics and a physics-based dismemberment system. Players can tactically blow off limbs to slow down rushing enemies, which is often crucial when ammunition is running low.
• Old-School Inventory Management: True to its 90s inspirations, players must carefully manage a highly limited inventory, constantly making agonizing choices between carrying extra healing items, puzzle artifacts, or reserve ammunition.
• Classic Puzzles: Progress is frequently gated by intricate, classic survival horror puzzles. Players must carefully inspect their environment, read discarded notes, and examine 3D objects in their inventory to find locker codes and unlock new areas.

Development and Legacy

Eternal Evil is a massive passion project, developed primarily by a single indie developer at the Kazakhstan-based studio, Honor Games, using Unreal Engine 4. It initially entered Steam Early Access in June 2022 before receiving its full 1.0 PC release on November 1, 2022.

Upon its PC launch, the game received a highly positive reception from the Steam community. Players affectionately dubbed it a highly charming indie homage to Resident Evil. While reviewers noted a fair share of “Euro-jank,” occasional bugs, and unpolished voice acting—flaws typical of a solo developer tackling a massive 15-to-20 hour 3D campaign—they heavily praised the game’s oppressive atmosphere, satisfying combat, and deep respect for the genre’s roots.

Thanks to its cult success on PC, Honor Games partnered with Axyos Games to successfully port the title to current-generation consoles. It launched on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 30, 2025, allowing a brand-new audience to experience the nightmare.
