Empire of the Ants (2024) is a groundbreaking photorealistic real-time strategy game developed by Tower Five and published by Microids. While it shares its name and literary inspiration (Bernard Werber’s novel) with the 2000 classic, this version is a radical departure in terms of technology and perspective, designed to feel more like an interactive nature documentary than a traditional top-down RTS.

As of May 2026, the game is regarded as a technical triumph of the early current-gen era. Although the developer, Tower Five, unfortunately ceased operations in late 2025 due to funding challenges, the game remains fully available and received several major content updates before the studio’s closure, cementing it as the definitive “insect-scale” strategy experience.

The Perspective: Ant #103,683

Unlike the 2000 version’s “eye in the sky” view, the 2024 game is played from a third-person perspective. You directly control a single courageous ant, the 103,683rd of the warrior caste, as she navigates the towering grass and massive debris of the Fontainebleau Forest.

This change in perspective transforms the RTS genre. You aren’t just clicking units; you are the general on the ground, physically scurrying up trees to scout enemy movements, leaping across ponds on floating leaves, and using pheromones to issue direct commands to your legions in real-time.

Gameplay: Tactician of the Undergrowth

The gameplay loop blends exploration, platforming, and strategic warfare. The focus is on the Federation of Bel-o-kan and its struggle to survive against rival colonies, predatory arachnids, and the changing seasons.

  • Pheromone Command: You don’t manage individual ants but rather “Legions.” Using a streamlined command radial, you direct warriors, gunners, and workers to assault positions, defend outposts, or harvest resources like wood and food.
  • The Seasonal Cycle: The forest is dynamic. The narrative and environment shift through spring, summer, and autumn. The weather and time of day significantly impact unit stats—for instance, cold rain might slow down movement but provide tactical cover for a surprise raid.
  • Base Expansion: You capture and upgrade “Nests” across the map. Instead of free-form building, you choose which specialized chambers to construct (Economy, Military, or Defense) on pre-defined slots, forcing you to specialize your colony based on the current threat.
  • Allies of the Forest: You aren’t limited to ants. As you progress, you can recruit support units from other species, including beetles, wasps, and even snails, each offering unique tactical advantages like heavy armor or aerial harassment.

Visual Style: The Power of Unreal Engine 5

The headline feature of Empire of the Ants is its staggering photorealism. Utilizing Unreal Engine 5.4, the game renders every leaf, twig, and insect with a level of detail that borders on the uncanny. The lighting and “macro-photography” aesthetic make the world feel vast and terrifying, where a discarded soda bottle is a gargantuan landmark and a single beetle is a world-ending boss encounter.

The “Swarm Together” Update (2025)

Before Tower Five’s closure, they released a final major update that significantly expanded the game’s replayability:

  • Horde Mode: A solo or co-op survival mode where you defend a central nest against endless, escalating waves of predatory insects.
  • 2v2 Co-op Multiplayer: A dedicated mode for team-based skirmishes on massive, sprawling maps.
  • The Paussus Unit: A new support unit capable of creating “Fog of War” clouds to hide your army’s movements from enemy scouts.
  • Story Challenge Mode: A specialized replay system for campaign missions with a global leaderboard and scoring system.

Key Features:

  • Photorealistic Scale — Experience the world from the perspective of the “micro-world,” rendered with stunning UE5 fidelity.
  • Third-Person Command — Lead your legions from the front lines, navigating the environment with agile platforming and direct pheromone signaling.
  • 20-Hour Campaign — A narrative-heavy story based on Bernard Werber’s best-selling saga, featuring the legendary ant #103,683.
  • Cross-Platform Ranked Multiplayer — Test your strategic skills in 1v1 or 3-player Free-For-All matches with players across PC and consoles.
  • Accessible Strategy — A “gradual difficulty” system that introduces RTS concepts to newcomers while offering deep, late-game tactical challenges for veterans.

Release Dates:

  • PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S — November 7, 2024.
  • Swarm Together Update — Mid-2025.
  • Current Status — Fully released; Tower Five studio closed in August 2025, but Microids continues to maintain server stability.
