Corridor 7: Alien Invasion is a 1994 first-person shooter developed by Capstone Software and published by Intracorp. Released on March 18, 1994, for PC (MS-DOS), it was built using a heavily modified version of the Wolfenstein 3D engine. Arriving shortly after the release of Doom, it was often unfairly dismissed as a clone. However, Corridor 7 introduced several innovative mechanics and atmospheric elements that set it apart, offering a surprisingly tense, sci-fi horror experience that remains a cult classic among boomer shooter enthusiasts.

Core Story

The year is 2012. You are a nameless Special Forces operative sent to investigate a catastrophic incident at the Delta Base, a highly classified underground research facility in Nevada. American scientists had recently brought back a mysterious artifact from Mars, but tampering with it inadvertently opened a dimensional portal. Now, the base has been completely overrun by hostile, bizarre alien entities. Your mission is to descend through all the subterranean levels—clearing out the extraterrestrial threat—and finally breach the titular “Corridor 7” at the very bottom of the facility to destroy the artifact and seal the portal forever.

Gameplay and Features

While it utilizes the flat, grid-based architecture of Wolfenstein 3D, Corridor 7 introduced significant gameplay twists that made it feel more like a tactical sci-fi thriller:

  • Elimination Requirement: Unlike Doom or Wolfenstein, where you only need to find the exit to finish a level, Corridor 7 requires you to eliminate every single alien on the floor before you are allowed to use the elevator to descend. This forces methodical exploration and heightens tension as you hunt for the final enemy.
  • Proximity Map and Visors: To aid in hunting down every alien, players are equipped with an invaluable proximity map that displays nearby enemies and items. You also acquire infrared and night-vision visors, which are essential for navigating pitch-black rooms and spotting invisible stalkers.
  • Interactive Environment: Capstone pushed the engine by adding interactive elements not seen in Wolfenstein. You can use computer terminals to unlock doors or check the floor’s status, and aliens can spawn out of seemingly harmless wall-mounted pods or teleporters behind you.
  • Alien Arsenal: You start with standard human weaponry (a taser, pistol, and shotgun), but as you descend, you acquire powerful alien technology, including a rapid-fire assault rifle, a plasma launcher, and a devastating alien blaster.
  • Ambushes and Traps: The game relies heavily on jumpscares and ambushes. Enemies frequently burst through false walls, turn invisible, or teleport directly into the room you just cleared.

PC Version

Originally released for MS-DOS on floppy disks, an enhanced CD-ROM version was released later in 1994. The CD version is widely considered superior, adding new levels, new enemy types, higher-quality digitized sound effects, a fantastic atmospheric CD-audio soundtrack, and even multiplayer deathmatch support. Today, the game runs perfectly via DOSBox, and there are community-made source ports and fan remasters that add mouselook and modernize the controls. It was finally re-released digitally on Steam and GOG in 2021, making it highly accessible for modern hardware.

Console Versions

Corridor 7: Alien Invasion was an exclusive PC title and never received any official console ports. It remains firmly rooted in the 90s DOS gaming era.

Quick Note

Corridor 7: Alien Invasion is a fantastic, overlooked slice of FPS history. While its tech was slightly outdated upon release, its commitment to a dark, isolated sci-fi atmosphere and its unique “clear the floor” mechanics make it a surprisingly stressful and engaging shooter.

In short: If you enjoy the labyrinthine level design of the Wolfenstein 3D era but want a heavy dose of Aliens-inspired dread, invisible enemies, and plasma rifles, this retro gem is well worth diving into.
