Clockwork Revolution
Clockwork Revolution is an upcoming first-person steampunk action role-playing video game developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios. First announced in June 2023, the game made a major re-emergence at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026, where developers unveiled extensive new gameplay footage and officially confirmed a 2027 launch window.
Operating as inXile’s first major high-budget, first-person RPG under Microsoft’s umbrella, the title blends dense, choices-matter role-playing systems with time-manipulation mechanics, set inside a visually striking, retro-futuristic Victorian metropolis.

The Metropolis of Avalon & The Chronometer Loop
The game is set within Avalon, a sprawling, golden-hued steampunk metropolis modeled heavily on a Victorian-era hierarchy. On the surface, Avalon presents itself as a technological marvel where flying steam trains traverse overhead, automaton robots handle menial labor, and wealthy elites integrate ornate clockwork prosthetics directly into their bodies.
However, this utopia is an artificial facade built on systemic oppression. Much of Avalon’s modern wealth and technological progress is heavily manipulated by its ruthless ruler, Lady Ironwood. Using a secret, high-tech time-travel device, Ironwood has spent decades traveling into the city’s past, altering historical flashpoints to systematically crush worker rebellions, keep the lower class impoverished, and preserve a social hierarchy that benefits her inner circle.
The Butterfly Effect Mechanic
The core narrative and structural loop revolves around a temporal device called the Chronometer. Rather than isolating time travel to minor localized puzzle rooms, players use the device to actively throw themselves 25 years into Avalon’s past.
Altering historical events in the past and returning to the present triggers a literal butterfly effect that actively rewrites the architecture, neighborhood demographics, political stability, and social conditions of the modern city. Altering a past infrastructure project might cause an entire slum district in the present to morph into a wealthy industrial sector, completely swapping out active factions, character motivations, and historical dialogue options.
Core Gameplay Pillars & RPG Mechanics
1. Steampunk Combat & Customization
Combat plays out entirely from a first-person perspective, relying on an intricate arsenal of late 19th-century firearms modified with volatile steam-powered technology. Players wield highly customizable weaponry—ranging from traditional revolvers and lever-action repeaters to heavy, modified Gatling-style guns. Gadgets, deployable defense traps, and steampunk explosives can be comprehensively modified and tuned at designated weapon benches found across the environment to match preferred tactical combat styles.
2. Character Customization and Social Reaction
Players step into the environment as Morgan Vanette, a fully voiced and customizable protagonist who joins forces with a localized working-class revolutionary cell. InXile explicitly highlighted the character creation matrix as one of the most mechanically expensive assets in the game, as it extends far past superficial cosmetics:
- Statistical Dialogue Shifts: Choosing specific background traits, combat statistics, and attributes fundamentally alters how non-player characters (NPCs) perceive and interact with Morgan.
- Reactive Crime Reports: If Morgan commits a theft or an assassination in a specific district, subsequent automated in-game news broadcasts and law enforcement crime reports will actively describe and analyze the event differently depending on the specific background build and aesthetic of the player’s customized character sheet.
Current Development Status & Platform Horizon
Following its extensive showcase presentation during the June 2026 Summer of Gaming season, Microsoft officially locked in Clockwork Revolution as a definitive Xbox console exclusive, permanently discarding rumors of a cross-platform port to alternative consoles like the PlayStation 5.
The title is actively slated for a Day One debut on the Xbox Game Pass ecosystem in 2027, supporting complete cross-buy and data-saving parity via the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative alongside its standalone retail launch on Steam and the Windows Store.
Leveraging the advanced geometry and high-tier lighting systems of Unreal Engine 5, the game is optimized exclusively for current-generation computing frameworks. The development pipeline is being actively supported by Shapeshifter Games—a studio formed by veteran ex-Volition developers—working hand-in-hand with inXile to polish the game’s expansive environmental destruction vectors, physics-based time-swapping visual transitions, and deep side-quest reactivity matrices ahead of its 2027 rollout.
