Cataclismo
Cataclismo (2025) is a brilliant, highly inventive fusion of real-time strategy (RTS), tower defense, and modular physics-based survival. Developed by the acclaimed indie studio Digital Sun (the creators of Moonlighter and The Mageseeker) and published by Hooded Horse, the title carved out a unique identity by essentially asking: “What if you took the horde survival of ‘They Are Billions’ and combined it with the literal, brick-by-brick construction of LEGO?”
After a successful Early Access campaign in mid-2024, the game launched its feature-complete 1.0 version on March 20, 2025, instantly becoming a darling for strategy enthusiasts who love tactical architectural planning.
The Narrative: The Spark in the Toxic Mist
The story takes place in a bleak, post-apocalyptic dark fantasy world ravaged by a cataclysmic event that shattered human civilization. A pervasive, toxic indigo fog known simply as The Mist cloaks the planet, and from its depths emerge Horrors—hideous, relentless pale monsters driven by a hive-mind urge to extinguish the last remnants of humanity.
The single-player campaign centers on Lady Iris, a special commander born with a mystical Perla stone embedded in her chest, granting her the ability to channel magical combat arts. Operating from Hogar, the heavily fortified last bastion city of mankind, Lady Iris leads a desperate expeditionary force out into the mist-shrouded frontier. Her mission is to reclaim ancient, ruined outposts, construct self-sustaining frontier bastions, and unearth a way to permanently clear the mist before Hogar’s defensive perimeter is overrun.
The Gameplay Engine: Daytime Architecture, Nighttime Attrition
The gameplay pipeline is split cleanly across a strict daily cycle, demanding a careful balance between macroeconomic expansion and tactical bottleneck management:
1. Daytime Phase (Gathering & LEGO-Style Construction)
During the sunlit hours, players scramble across the map to set up automated logging camps, stone quarries, and oxygen filtration hubs. The crown jewel of Cataclismo is its stone-by-stone modular building system. Rather than clicking a prefabricated wall asset, you must manually stack individual wooden beams, stone arches, iron doors, and crenelated battlements block-by-block.
The Physics Guardrail: Every individual brick on your wall is fully bound by realistic physical gravity and structural integrity rules. If a horde of Horrors forcefully hammers away and destroys a foundational structural pillar at the bottom of your gate, the entire five-story tower built above it will realistically buckle, splinter, and collapse under its own weight, crushing any friendly archers standing on top.
2. Nighttime Phase (The Siege)
When dusk falls, the economy halts, red beacon lines highlight which direction the mist waves are coming from, and the Horrors charge. Combat plays out in real-time as your defensive layouts are pushed to their absolute limits.

Unit Archetypes & The Elevation Meta
Positioning your standing army relies heavily on physical high-ground multipliers. Stacking bricks high to build elevated platforms significantly scales the capabilities of your troops, allowing a tiered, overlapping defense network:
| Unit Class | Ideal Tactical Placement | Core Trait & Strategic Utility |
| Bowmen | High Towers / Castle Walls | Baseline ranged marksmen; gains massive, armor-piercing range and projectile damage buffs depending entirely on how many vertical bricks high they are standing. |
| Lobbers / Cannoneers | Deep Bastion Chokepoints | Heavy artillery units; fire high-arcing pots of volatile boiling oil and poison flasks to decimate tightly clustered groups of ground horrors. |
| Vanguard Fighters | Narrow Gates & Ground Walls | Heavily armored physical melee tanks; required to form defensive frontlines to block gates and stall incoming monsters while ranged units fire from above. |
- The Time Anchor Meta: As a hero unit on the field, Lady Iris possesses the unique, lore-integrated capability to forge a Time Anchor (F5/F9). If a sudden wave structural collapse happens or a critical wall section is breached, players can actively trigger the anchor to bend time backward, returning the entire map state to an earlier hour to let you fix your architectural mistakes.
The 1.0 Milestone: “The Depths” Biome
With its 1.0 retail launch out of Early Access, Digital Sun introduced a massive endgame environment known as The Depths. Deep subterranean maps introduce an oppressive, eerie layer of strategy where light is a finite resource required for absolute survival.
In the pitch-black corridors of the Depths, your ranged soldiers are physically completely unable to target or fire at Horrors moving through the shadows. This forces a total redesign of your base blueprints, requiring you to construct networks of fire-braziers, high-cost glowing crystal towers, and illumination mirrors to light up your defensive lanes before your walls can even engage the incoming threat.
