US Senate Opens Child Safety Investigation Into Roblox
The US Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism has opened a formal investigation into Roblox, accusing the company of prioritizing revenue and engagement over the safety of children on its platform. Subcommittee chairman Josh Hawley and ranking member Dick Durbin signed a letter addressed directly to Roblox CEO David Baszucki, making clear that congressional patience has run out.
What the Senate Letter Says
According to PC Gamer, the letter states that despite Roblox’s repeated public claims of being a safe environment for children, “the public record raises serious questions about this promise.” The senators cited a pattern of criminal activity facilitated through the platform over the past decade, including grooming, sexual abuse, kidnapping, rape, and murder involving children who met perpetrators through Roblox. The letter also alleges that Roblox has been used to distribute child sexual abuse material and to coerce minors into producing explicit content. “Children on your platform are hurting. Congress will not look the other way,” the letter reads.
A Company Under Sustained Pressure
As GameSpot notes, this investigation adds to an already lengthy list of legal and regulatory challenges facing the platform. Roblox is currently facing action from Louisiana, Kentucky, Florida, Texas, LA County, Australia, and the UK, among others, over alleged systemic child safety failures. The company has taken some steps to address concerns, including tightening restrictions on unrated content and introducing age estimation checks and limited account types to reduce exposure for younger users.
Despite those measures, Roblox CEO David Baszucki has made several statements that complicated the company’s public standing. He described the platform’s predator problem as “not just a problem, but an opportunity” earlier in 2025, a framing that drew swift backlash. He also floated the idea of expanding Roblox into a dating platform, a suggestion that landed poorly given the ongoing scrutiny over child safety. In a separate and contradictory signal, Baszucki told concerned parents to simply not allow their children on Roblox at all.
Business Impact and Audience Trends
The pressure on Roblox is showing up in its numbers. While the platform still commands a massive user base, growth has slowed compared to its peak years, and that softening has weighed on the company’s share price. The stock has largely traded at levels consistent with 2023 and 2024 figures, reflecting investor uncertainty about the platform’s trajectory. The Senate investigation, coming on top of multiple ongoing lawsuits and regulatory reviews across several jurisdictions, represents another significant headwind for a company that has struggled to get ahead of its safety narrative.
