Riot Shuts Down 2XKO Development After Low Player Retention
Riot Games is shutting down active development of its tag-team fighting game 2XKO before the year is out, the studio confirmed in an official statement. The game launched in January 2026 but failed to hold onto enough players to make continued development financially viable.
Why Riot Is Pulling the Plug
According to Video Games Chronicle, Riot monitored 2XKO’s performance closely in the months following its full release and concluded that player numbers were not on a sustainable path. In its statement, the studio acknowledged that many players had tried the game and that a dedicated daily community had formed, but that the overall retention figures were not enough to justify ongoing investment.
“We haven’t seen enough players stick with the game to get to a path toward sustainability,” Riot said in the post.
What Happens to the Game Now
As reported by PC Gamer, Riot has outlined a wind-down plan that still includes meaningful additions before development closes. Two new champions, Lux and Samira, will be added to the roster during the remainder of 2026, along with feature improvements and content updates. A final bug fix patch is scheduled for December 2026.
Servers will remain active for online play beyond 2026, and offline play is not affected. Riot stated it will provide advance notice if those plans change.
Compensation and Content Unlocks
Riot is taking steps to compensate players who spent money on the game. Starting immediately, all characters are being unlocked for every player. Most cosmetic items are also being bundled in, and Riot is issuing full refunds for any purchases made on or before August 20. Avatar and player profile items will become earnable through in-game Credits starting with patch 1.3.1 in September, and any content a player already owns will remain in their account.
| Milestone | Details |
|---|---|
| All characters unlocked | Effective immediately |
| Refund cutoff date | Purchases on or before August 20 |
| Credits unlock patch (patch 1.3.1) | September 2026 |
| New champions (Lux, Samira) | Arriving during remainder of 2026 |
| Final bug fix patch | December 2026 |
| Servers remaining online | Beyond 2026 |
A Difficult Outcome for a Long-Anticipated Project
2XKO had been in development and public testing for several years before its January 2026 launch, building anticipation among both the League of Legends fanbase and the broader fighting game community. The game’s closure before the end of its first calendar year on the market marks a significant setback for Riot’s ambitions in the genre. The studio said its goal through the wind-down period is to “do right by the players who have invested in us so far and want to continue playing 2XKO.”
