Leaked Footage Shows Microsoft’s Cancelled Perfect Dark Reboot
In-development gameplay footage from The Initiative’s cancelled Perfect Dark reboot has surfaced online, giving the public its first raw look at what the long-troubled Xbox spy shooter looked like before Microsoft pulled the plug in 2025.
What the Footage Shows
The clips, first published by Mp1st and now circulating across social media, are made up of several short in-development sequences. According to Video Games Chronicle, the footage shows multiple weapons and locations, an escape sequence featuring protagonist Joanna Dark, a hacking segment, and what appear to be weapons-effect tests recorded in a greybox environment. Mp1st reports the material comes from a VFX artist who worked on the project.
A Development Marked by Turbulence
The Initiative, a Santa Monica studio founded in 2018 by former Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher, announced Perfect Dark in 2020 as its debut title. Crystal Dynamics later joined as a co-developer. Microsoft showed official gameplay to the public in 2024, four years after the initial announcement, but the road to that point was rocky. VGC reported in March 2022 that the studio had experienced a fast and furious wave of senior departures over the preceding year. The game was ultimately cancelled in 2025 as part of sweeping changes across Microsoft’s gaming division, alongside Rare’s Everwild.
A Last-Ditch Rescue Attempt
The cancellation was not without a potential lifeline. According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, as cited by Video Games Chronicle, GTA publisher Take-Two entered discussions with both Microsoft and Embracer to fund and publish the game. Those talks broke down because the parties could not agree on long-term ownership of the Perfect Dark franchise, and the deal collapsed. Mp1st had previously published concept art and gameplay details from the cancelled title last year, making this latest footage leak a continuation of an ongoing drip of material from the defunct project.
