KRAFTON has cancelled PUBG: Black Budget, the extraction shooter it was quietly building under the PUBG Studios banner, before the game could reach a full public release. The studio confirmed the decision on Steam, citing an internal review that found the project’s current direction could not support a satisfying long-term player experience.

What Black Budget Was

PUBG: Black Budget was a first-person extraction shooter that attempted to blend the loop familiar to fans of the extraction genre with core elements carried over from PUBG’s battle royale formula. The concept was distinctive enough to attract attention during its Closed Alpha phase, where the game peaked at close to 10,000 concurrent players and climbed into Steam’s wishlist charts, according to Insider Gaming. Those numbers were not enough to convince KRAFTON the project had a viable future.

In a statement posted to Steam, the studio said: “After reviewing the project’s development status and future direction, we concluded that its current direction would not allow us to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term. We have therefore made the difficult decision to end development of PUBG: Black Budget.” KRAFTON also thanked Closed Alpha participants and said lessons learned during development and testing would carry forward into future projects.

A Crowded and Unforgiving Genre

The extraction shooter space has proven extremely difficult to crack, even for established names. As Insider Gaming notes, high-profile titles including Escape from Tarkov and ARC Raiders have each faced significant struggles with player sentiment and long-term retention. The genre’s complexity, regardless of whether a game leans into PvE, hardcore PvP, or a hybrid of both, has claimed more projects than it has sustained.

PUBG: Black Budget is now the latest casualty in a growing list of extraction shooters that never found their footing.

A Pattern of Cancellations at KRAFTON

Black Budget is not the first PUBG-branded project to be shelved in recent memory. Earlier this year, KRAFTON also cancelled PUBG: Blindspot, a separate experimental title that lasted only two months in early access before being shut down, per Insider Gaming. The back-to-back cancellations raise questions about the studio’s ability to expand beyond its core battle royale product.

KRAFTON does still have another new title in the pipeline. PUBG: DED.NET, a roguelike shooter with an unusual visual style that debuted at Gamescom in August, remains in development. Its creative director was already fielding questions about how the team planned to avoid the fate that has now befallen both Blindspot and Black Budget.
